Autodesk Mudbox Challenge

You are challenged to flaunt your Autodesk® Mudbox® skills by sculpting and painting the ultimate armed and dangerous character.

Whether it be a cowboy with a six shooter, a pirate brandishing a cutlass, a damsel with dynamite, a giant killer bee with stinger missiles, or maybe your mom with a rolling pin. It does not have to be full of violence and gore, non-violent entries are encouraged (be different!), perhaps a clown with a cream pie, a lawyer with a writ, or the dreaded dentist with a drill. Get creative. Whoever, or whatever it is, the character must have some kind of threatening item, and posed in a way that suggests nobody should mess with them.

The character can be a man, woman, alien, elf, monster, an attorney, or anything you want. Also the style is up to you: comic, photorealistic, manga, etc. Most importantly, the character should be posed and painted. No T-posed nor flat-shaded models will be considered by the judges.

This is a Mudbox challenge, so you must use Mudbox to sculpt and detail your character's mesh, and use Mudbox's painting features to texture your character. You may use any software you like to create the base mesh (ex: 3ds Max or Maya) and any 2D software (ex: Adobe® Photoshop) for finishing touches and backgrounds. Please disclose in your Work-In-Progress (WIP) uploads what software you are using for each step!

If you don't have Mudbox, you can Download a special FREE Trial that will not expire until the end of the event! To activate the special FREE trial, use the serial number 372-85829308. Q: Why must entrants be members of CGTantra?
We need to be able to contact all entrants – we have one registration system. This also means that all competition entrants are covered by the same set of Terms and Conditions.

Q: Do I need a paid CGTantra membership?
Not at all! Our challenges are open to all CGTantra members. If you don't already have a free account get one here.

Q: Can I have multiple entries?
Yes.

Q: Because of hardware limitations, is it ok to render a part and use it as a background, or render in "layers" and composite it all together later?
This is how professionals work – you should use every tool and technique available in the best way possible.

Q: Can I use the default Human Body in Mudbox as my base mesh?
Yes, the default human body mesh that ships with Mudbox 2013 is ok for everyone to use as a starting base mesh, along with their other base starting meshes.

Q: Can I use Autodesk Maya for character hair in Mudbox challenge?
Yes, you can use other software for your final renderings to add effects, like hair, fur smoke, fire.

Q: Can I use a trial version of a software?
Yes. We don't care. The final image must not have watermarks on it.

Q: Can I use other 3D software or pre-fabricated models?
This is no different from using your own pre-built models or the parametric models now available in most 3D systems. However you should add significant creative input to make the models and results unique, and Autodesk Mudbox should be used for the sculpting and painting aspects.

Q: Are random or parametric terrain and foliage/plant generation software (Bryce/Vue/Terragen) allowed?
Yes.

Q: Is it ok to use vray, RenderMan or 3rd party renderers for rendering?
Yes – you are free to use any software you like.

Q: While I know its ok to use 2D textures in this 3D project....is it going to be ok to use a 2D element as a back drop? Like a background....like a matte painting?
Yes. You should always use every tool that is appropriate in the best way possible.

Q: What if I am a winner and I want a different prize? E.g. What if I win the Grand Prize but I want the Runner Up prize instead?
You can contact the other winner with the prize that you want, and ask if they want to do an exchange. What you guys do with your prizes is up to you, and we're not going to be involved in it.

Q: How can I get out of this challenge?
Just stop submitting.

Q: Can I upload my WIP images to my own server? Is that counted?
No. Please use the Challenge site facility to upload your Work-In-Progress. It allows us to track the entries properly, and guarantee continued hosting of all images.

Q: Is there a video category?
No. However if you want to submit and animation of your model this will count towards extra credit

Q: My question wasn't answered above. What should I do?
