hi vaibhav,
a few days ago some kids asked me how to get into animation. and i honestly couldnt answer them. I believe training in traditional arts is a really strong requirement for animators. and yet, a fine art degree takes five years, and after that, they would still be equivalent to another guy who did a six month course in software....
and the worst part is that the places that offer these six month courses actually seem to downplay the importance of fine arts ...
what is your view on this matter?

hi vaibhav..nice to c u here n interacting.every1 is asking u, no1 is replyin ur ques. so...here i am..
well first of all wat do you mean by our films?u r talkin about urself or our means whole indian cinema?
well as far as urr films (shaort films) r concernrd, they are just superb.i can laugh a whole day n may b more after just watching a 2 min. of ur film. but for indian cinema as a whole..they are aweful.but d scene is changin now wid movies like roadside romeo n upcoming films like jumbo, arjuna & kuchi kuchi hota hai.they seem 2 b promising.i won't blame d indian artiosts for this.indian artists have great capability to create gud animations but the prob. is d film makers.they dont even no wat d animation is n want a gud quality product in a very short span of time with very little group artists wich r very less paid too.i think they have no respect 4 this industry n they r doin it just 4 d sake of money.they dont even think dat outsiders will laugh after watchin their movies.they pay no attention to scripting, character designing, luk n feel f d movie, quality of animation n just make it by thinkin dat children will attract atleat once.may b im wrong but wud u pls tell me dat wat u think? dont u think dat indian animation industry will never grow like this.

Hi Samarth,
will look forward to your scripts.
v
Hi Shrey,
i believe animation in our country has gone into so much specialization that there are 100 doors to get into animation! even otherwise animation as a medium or an art form has so many forms that there will still be a 100 different ways to get into it!! So i guess there isnt any specific formula on how one should enter the field. It all depends on the individual and his/ her interests.
A 6 month training will teach you how to extract a tooth. But a decent education will introduce you to the entire human body so when you pull out a tooth, you know what else is likely to get affected!! I personally wouldn't want to go to a doctor with a 6 month training. Today you can choose what you want to do. Some are happy to just extract teeth all their lives and collect their salaries. Others want to explore much more. Your way to get into animation depends on where you plan to go.
Those who downplay fine arts either dont know what fine art is or they dont know what animation is!
All the best!
v
Hi maniemator,
I am not sure which reply of mine you are referring to.
I think filmmakers get wiser after the film is made and also after seeing the audience's reaction to their films. I sincerely hope the same for our filmmakers. I am also hoping that there will be some brilliant films in store.
I feel education (and not training) will play a key role in the growth of our industry. My answer to Shrey's query (above) also holds good for your question.
v.

hi harshal,
i think you are the best judge in this case. i am sorry i dont know much about the education courses offered abroad by the schools you've mentioned. the best you can do is check out all the options you have both here as well as abroad. check out the curriculum/ content that they offer, and their modes of teaching. go for whatever excites you the most.
on the financial part, again you know your situation best. so i guess its all up to you!
i can only wish you all the best!

regarding tasi session
Hi vaibhav,
ffice ffice" /> >>
That was great experience to hear MR. RAM MOHAN sir n his experiences n all. Thanks a lot for making this event possible. Many of my doubts are cleared and many things i realised too during the session. Now i am going to learn this art in proper way not for the business but to experience the beauty of this art and to communicate with the people by my stories.
>>
But I want to mention few things
Ram sir explained and shared his experiences and character design in great manner. But I found there was one thing missing... Many students presented there and I heard by them the seminar was about preproduction, but that was not true it was about animation, people here have already set their mind where they want to go (I mean animation, modelling, rigging n all) they don’t want to learn the other things and the process of storytelling and they haven’t realised that for all department of animation they should have knowledge of principle and basics of animation and he has to artistic too.. A good observer and moreover ability to say something by his art whatever will be his stream. The same story what is in paper is tell by the coordination of every person (modeller, animator). People should realise they are part of the storytelling.
Well that was my view, pardon me if I am wrong, hope u cover this things in your upcoming sessions. So people can have more awareness they are not in any business they are into a beautiful art where you have to communicate with others by your art.
>>
Thanks and regard,
Samarth lahri

hi samarth,
you are right.
however i dont think it is the student/ audience's fault.
there is a big fault in the way we are encouraging animation training. we are happy to just churn out animators, modelers, riggers, lighters and matchboxes!! And we claim THAT is animation! we are the frogs in the well! we think our well is the entire world.
jokes apart we dont give enough importance to pre production ( including script, storytelling, character design, visual scripting, animatics, art direction, layouts, staging etc.). 90% of the students present in that session confessed that they never had a course on character design in their curriculum! what a pity!
We at TASI try our best to address this issue through our sessions but we need a lot more help. I sincerely request training institutes to incorporate pre production in a more comprehensive manner in their curriculum. We compare our films to those made by Pixar, Dreamworks and Disney. What we dont see is that out of the 5 years that go into making a movie, 3 years go into the pre production. Thats much more than half the time, right??
vaibhav.

hi sakshi,
regarding a career in animation there are more than enough opportunities in india. Ad films, tv channels, feature films, games, music videos, vfx > all use heavy doses of animation. Its up to you to decide what your area of interest is and to figure out what kind of work different studios are doing.
As an animator you need to showcase your knowledge of movement and your way of putting life into your animation. As a graphic designer you need to show a strong sense of visual aesthetics. Thats how placements work, thats how companies choose people and thats what companies are looking for.
I guess we have done to death the topic of software in this forum. There are many replies regarding software.
All the best.
v
Hi Yogi,
The ideas you communicate thru your still images are good. You should try the same in animation as well. Translating your design as well as your storytelling into a moving format is a different ball game. Explore that.
All the best.
v
Thanks Chetan,
will check out your hi res reel.
v
Hi Vikas,
You need to understand poses first to recreate them. Sketching from life is the best example i can think of. Again we have discussed that before in this forum. Check it out. You need to be consistent with it for atleast 2-3 months to see any kind of results. Send me your sketches if you like. Will let you know my views.
And stop copying!!
All the best.

hi abhijeet,
unfortunately there are no formal education courses being offered in clay animation in india. the best bet would be to attend workshops on stopmotion and then explore the medium yourself. fortunately for you the next workshop by TASI is on stopmotion. In feb 09 most probably. check out the site after a week for details. www.tasionline.org
whe do you want to meet?
