Question Any production experience with Motion Builder ?

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone can share some of their production experience using Motion Builder in their pipeline. It'll be great to know the pro's and con's of integrating that.

FYI, the company i am working is into Animation Features and TV Series.

Any help and information sharing will be appreciated.

its is nice if u have all your bones named as per motionbuilder requirements.

pros: animation layers, mocap import, flexible to animator, good controls, easy to skin and start animation for normal rig types mainly biped of a skinny character

cons: sometimes scene import is very scary, mainly the heavy scenes, skinning is pain when its some fatty or fleshy character, dynamics not calculated inside the MB

everything looked cake when i saw the demo but using it feels wiered...
feels maya's better to animate than import/export to MB often

excellent for: if u have mocap data to be cleaned and used for animating your meshes

Default Never Animate Again

its nice especially when u want to reuse ur animation,

in our project we NEVER animated, even when we needed new motions for any character, we looked thru past episodes and found similar movements for any character then we merged and blended the motion data in story window,

it sounds weird for any keyframe animator but believe me, it SAVES a lot of time,

you not only can blend between different animation data but between MOCAP and keyframe data too, and the best thing is you can do that without destroying any of those data,

and for dynamics , i can say that motionbuilder is built to be
REAL TIME CHARACTER ANIMATION package, so it can do it best only,

and ya, scene opening sometimes becomes scary and worst thing is it doesnt give scene handling control like maya, in maya you can look in scene graph and delete unwanted nodes , while Motionbuilder is not much transperant ,

but still, its great package with some clever ideas,
