@rapheal: nice portraits... I especially like the 2nd one coz it captures the emotion very well. But, I think you have the same issue that I'm facing which is... using values with more confidence . I've been trying to improve that myself coz I suck at it. Here's a still life study I did last week as an exercise (from photograph). I'm hoping that once I practice these easier ones, I'll be able to use them in my portraits with more confidence .

@vitalmaya: thanks .. you are right about the use of more confident shades .. but some how i haven't figured that out yet .. but will definitely keep trying.

I'll just share what I tried. Warning: I'm not an expert... in fact, the apple above is my *first* value study ...

I had been avoiding value study for an obscenely long time myself. And then, when I decided to finally study it, I did what any enthusiastic student would do... try shading a human figure, without any reference :P. Coz.. u know.. painting apples is really boring . Of course, I'm only posting the apple above, so you can imagine what happened to the human study

But honestly, I'm glad I did the apple. I definitely learnt a lot more with it and have a bit more confidence and understanding. So, I'm gonna try some more still life studies now...BTW, I used the method described by Andrew Loomis in his book "Creative Illustration" (available for free online, in case you don't have it already)

It'll be great if the experts can pitch in, but I just wanted to share my experience in case you're facing the same issue as me.

@ Rahul ur 2nd potrait is really gud it has life in it

some fast sketches done in painter wid oils inspired by sparth and Hydropix .Hope i cud becum like them one day

Rahul/vitalmaya- i think you need to avoid so much of white in your painting..white is like an icing on the cake

Santu, could you please share the ref. photos you have used for those painter sketches?

thanks shyam, i did try once but it didn't come out very well ..never the less i will keep trying .. in the meanwhile i have another WIP for the previous one.
