STOP MOTION DEMYSTIFIED

As the trend goes, stop motion has caught on in a big way with today’s young animators who are experimenting in movie making using the stop motion techniques. So The Animation Society of Kolkata organized a workshop on Stop Motion Animation - from concept to creation by Delwyn Jude Remedios at Gyan Manch on Monday the 7th of September 2009.
Delwyn has completed his PGDP Animation and Film Design from National Institute of Design. From clay to paper to sand there isn't a medium which he hasn't experienced and brought the best out of. His film ‘Chai Break’ secured 1st Place at FICCI Frames BAF Awards 2009 and Digicon Tokyo, Japan 2008. It also received a Special Jury Mention at Monstra International Film Festival Lisbon, Portugal 2009 and Asifa India 2009. Another film titled ‘0200’ has also bagged the 1st Place at Monstra International Film Festival Lisbon, Portugal 2009 and 2nd Place at Digicon Tokyo, Japan 2008. His latest film ‘Deluge’ has been nominated for TVCA this year.

This seminar at Gyan Manch was all about the art and technique of Stop Motion Animation from concept to creation. Using a live demonstration of how to create a simple model rig using thermocol, tape and wire and then animating a frame by frame walk cycle for the same, the audience received a detailed insight into the world of stop motion. The whole session was an interactive one, where the audience got their doubts and queries clarified. Few amongst the 200 odd audience members also had a chance of trying their hands with the animation. There was also a section for the screening of the recently made stop motion animation films from the students of NID and the audience just loved the films like “Three Little Pigs”, “KiddKrida” “One fine Friday” and “0200”

The whole workshop was a great learning experience and as Delwyn put it “Don’t be afraid of experimenting. Always try to do what’s best for the project, not just what’s the best technique or the best software” and surely people had a lot to take home with that thought.

Another very important point about film making which was established by Delwyn is that the film maker must connect with the story in some way and it would ultimately show in the final output.

TASK-The Animation Society of Kolkata plans to hold many more sessions of this nature in future and hopes to establish the culture of good animation film making in the city of Joy through these endeavours.
