All true work is a lot ... and finally understand that the work will not pass on the competition because of the city I spat and the characters do))
I think for this among other reasons that we should change the guidelines and title of this challenge forum, or create a new one. There should be a fantasy or digital painting challenge, instead of or in addition to "matte painting" challenge.

I think they shouldn't change title, guidelines etc, because this is matte painting forum and matte paintings have there place in industry.
On the other hand i agree that there could be another challenge(digital paintings, conceptart, illustration challenge), but i think they can be found somewhere on this forums.

I only bring this up because, again, I don't see any consistency from month to month as far as the winners. They have all be outstanding work, but almost none of them in my view either fit the theme and\or guidelines, or they aren't true matte paintings. A lot of them are more concepty or fantasy art, especially when you start adding people and moving elements, like water, boats, etc. That would never fly with a compositor, who has to add that stuff in later. Again, I'm not putting down the winners at all. I think they've all been great works, but someone like Mr. Alexx here, he has amazing stuff, but doesn't get winner recognition. This is not because his work isn't great (because it is) but it doesn't always fit whatever superflous guidelines the judges are looking for from month to month, and it isn't "true" matte painting. If we create a digital or fantasy forum, it gives an outlet for such amazing artists like Mr. Alexxx and others, who tend to make things that are amazing, and still have a forum for photoreal mattes. This is the big problem, as I see it, with mattepainting.org. Lots of cool stuff, but ask any matte painter in the business, and you'll find that very few of the works on that site are usable as professional mattes, but they are very cool to look at nonetheless

Yuo are right, but as much ias i love what mr. Alexx do it's still concept art or illustration, then matte painting.
Btw he noticed for him self that character are more important and detailed in this image then medieval kingdom(topic of this month challenge)
True. The Book of Five Rings states that to only master one weapon is as if to not have learned any. On the other hand, whoever picks the monthly winners doesn't show the consistency to justify this amount of respect. Also, it depends on what you are trying to do with your work; is it just fun, or are you trying to build up some professional chops? Again, my main point is, a)what wins every month, and b), who unfairly gets left out? It makes no sense for me to submit my matte paintings into the 3D game environment challenge. They are two different things. One can be the other, but is the converse always the contrapositive?
If there are two forums, you can still always do both. If not, I feel the confusion, at least on my end, will continue, but as always, just my thoughts. Either way, lots of good work here

W i think you shouldn't worry that much and just enjoy creating good work. We all now that mr.Alexx works are top notch.
Judges have their mind whats good/better/winner, they are judges and they will make decision.
Btw Mr.Alexx do you have online portfolio, i would like to see it?
I agree with that. However, I am looking to get a good grasp on what professionals are looking for when it comes to matte paintings. I might be changing careers soon anyway, so in the end, it's all just for fun. I'm not in any dire need of a video card or t-shirts

hi Wagonburner. You know, as we said from the begining of this forum, we do matte here for fun ! We are all in the world of graphic design, matte, etc... There are student who maybe want to work in the matte industry, so this forum is perfect to learn matte painting, or there are people like me who work in the business of graphic design and do matte for fun and to continue to create art !
So, we don't care about win or not, for sure, to be recognized by the jury it's nice, but if we don't win, it doesn't matter !
We do matte painting because we like it, not for winning.
Whatever, Mr.Alexx, I love your work ! your style of your illustrations it's very nice, as Mateja, I want to see your portfolio !!
And for your matte, It's shame that your medieval town it's not so "fantastic" as your caracters ! Like "Lanfeust de Troy", a french comic... (big town, big, heavy, high and fantastic buildings,...)
I think that everyone makes the best of its capabilities and for their own pleasure as well, if it becomes interesting to someone else is all the more better. Peace to you all and may the force be with you))

I plan to join the Video challenge.. anyone cares to join me?
Oh back to mr. Wagonburners point.
I for one understand you my friend. I see your point clearly and to be honest, this has been a huge topic of debate among professionals themselves and it comes out over and over again. In my course of learning, 3 years and counting, this has come up more than 7 times now and always ends up unresolved.
To be honest, no one can draw a line on "Forum and Online" mattepaintings, all of these great artworks most of the time end up looking like photoreal concept artworks. Elements that might not be feasible in real world mattepainting will always be present, and since there is no line, boundery or whatever, mattepainting then becomes fine art. One thing is consistent (for most of the time), a mattepainting should at least be photoreal.
To make it a point also, if your desire is to create a demo reel for mattepainting, then all of the great artworks that you see in this forum, including mine will not cut it. One huge reason is that it's not realistic at all. Real mattepaintings are BORING and thats what I do everyday, tons of patch-ups and scene extention. I seldom get a scene where I can do everything from scratch. Lets face it, a mattepainter can be glamourous, but behind it all, if you don't love the job, its downright BORING!
Like the others said... this forum, along with the rest is just for fun. If I had to be strict, and this forum also strict, then this place would look like a bunch of pictures and nothing special. But like Mr. Alexx, we are all artist who wants to have fun. So we come here and express ourselves, the way we want it. Were not to win the prizes but for the sheer fun of it.
Hey, I will be building my 2009 Demo Reel soon... and it will be full of Real World mattepainting, if you guys want to create one too, then PM me, I'll give you guidelines on how to do it right...
