thanks for the kind words everyone!
i went and took a BUNCH of photos this afternoon and it looks like some will work nicely with my scene. i'll post another update before bed!!!
btw, i have a TON of sky photos on my flickr page. anyone is welcome to use them if you find them handy and I update the folder periodically. if you are unable to download them let me know and i'll get you the full res version, most of which are about 3k wide.
thanks jama!! ok here's tonight's progress,
bottom left is a mess... but better than yesterday. have to sort through the 5 or 6 photos that are making up the water and half submerged rocks and clean up the masking. they way they're overlapping at the moment is really dumb and i should have thought it though a little better, BUT too late to worry about that now...
some values are serious out of whack but i've gotta get up in 4 hours so i'll take care of that tomorrow...
spent a good chunk of tonight sifting through about 100 photos i took today after work, looking for the right ones. then i painted highlights on most of the foreground rocks, i need to fix more than a couple of them but again, i'll take care of that tomorrow.
i think i should have this all together for the deadline. i'll work on the other concept as well and whichever one looks better is the one i'll submit for the final.
off to bed for me!
more updates soon!
Amazing progress Gordon! This is simply beautiful! Love the details you've placed here! and THANK YOU for the sky references! I'll try to post my online flicker account here too! Thank you once again!
BTW can you instead unlock this account so that we can download the full res without disturbing you?
Fear not Mateja! i'm still playing with that one too!
i'll post it tonight or tomorrow. took a BUNCH of photos of garbage i saw in bushes to give me ideas of things i could use to decorate the scene. AND i re-rendered all the 3d bits the other night. just haven't comped them into the psd yet. I'll have to take votes or something to see which one will make it to the final
It's going to be a VERY tough decision for me. i like them both for such different reasons...

I'm still getting used to this site, so I apologize for being so late on comments, not just here, but all over the board. So much good work to look at, and still need to keep up with my own stuff!!
Anyway, Gordon, I really like your loose sketches on the first page. Many of them really have a Helms Deep kind of feel. The Skull render is amazing. I hope to get more into zbrush and mudbox this year. I would only be echoing everyone else when I say well done, everything looks awesome. My only comment is that to me, it doesn't feel, well, "ancient". Maybe too many hours of WoW have me saying this, but it looks like something that might still be in use, albeit in an ancient time. I half expect Conan or some Orcs to come walking out of there, as opposed to say, Indiana Jones. Does that make sense ?Just my thoughts, but otherwise, man, it's freaking awesome!!
both your concepts are great
you have the freedom of posting both your concepts in the final.
great work from the start.
but the ant temple does stand out in both your concepts.
cheers.
there is this one rock kinda thing sticking out of the water on the left of your matte... its there from the start... i dont know what that is but it does catch the eye..
just an observation.
Geez, I'm happy to say that my 12 step program for World of Warcraft has saved me from that painful addiction!! ha ha, nah, seriously, I've been playing since the beta days, so I'm a bit burned out on it, and yes, way to busy with work and life. I'm on the Kil'Jaeden server, one of the original Beta servers.
Glad you like the Wagonburner. I've been using it for years. Speaking of work, time to get back on my mattes. Trying to get a job doing this for a living, you know?
whew! busy night. lightning storm here got me off to a late start on tonight's progress. didn't want to fry my machine!
i worked on the ant temple for a little bit tonight. just some subtle adjustments and new rendered elements were added in.
after that i worked on the skull temple scene for a bit. i think most of the major parts are in place now. the next few nights i'll spend tweaking levels and cleaning up masking between layers. here's what it's looking like now.
here's a closeup of some of the rocks. LOTS of hand painting over top of them. i'll clean some of this up before the deadline...
off to bed! 3.5 hours is getting short on sleep, even for me.
ok, small update. i spent a good chunk of last night doing really small clean-up work around the image. i didn't save anything out to show but i snapped a quick photo of my screen.
my goal tonight is to make some debris on the beach that helps to give a good and immediate scale reference.
i've added a silhouette of a figure on the ramp for my personal reference but this will be removed before final. i picture seagulls making homes in and around this thing so i started to experiment with that before i went to sleep but didn't clean up or properly scale the birds i placed..
here's a crappy photo....

Thanks! here is an actual update. I added some old stranded boats and debris that has become damaged and trapped behind the rocks. i figure something like this would attract people in passing boats to come have a look. bad idea!
the values and masking need lots of work and i've got to rescale a few things to make it all work but i've gotta work tomorrow. (i know, working saturday = lame!) SO, i'm going to sleep...
here's where it's at.. i'll have a new update in a few hours whenever i get done at the job...
and a bit more close-up
