ok, today at work i had LOTS of rendering to do which was hogging up my machine, SO i knocked out a bunch of quick sketches for this challenge. the top two i'm gonna toss, the second one is too similar to something else i've been working on. the third one down i'm going to develop a little more but i think the bottom image is the keeper. i have a ton of ideas and it seems like it'll keep me motivated.

i'll post some roughly colored version shortly!

here's the link in case this thing shrinks the images too much!

OK, after doing a few hours of freelance i finally got around to roughing one of these sketches in. it's really loose and will more than likely end up being partially rebuilt in 3ds max or maya for the building geometry and the giant monster skull entrance. or... maybe i'll take a stab at painting the whole thing... we'll see. anyway, i'll post another update tomorrow.

Hi Gordon,

The sketches look awesome! The rough colored sketch is looking very nice! But, the environment looks a bit scary/evil entrance; does not quite look like a holy place. It's just my personal opinion! Other than that, it's looking very nice!

back to the freelance work for a few hours. when i get back i'll be adding some insets to those big walls with carvings of what i think the rest of that monster would look like OR some hanging banners, not sure yet i'll try both. i think this will be a tropical setting with a somewhat "skull island" feel but more plants, banana trees palms etc...

kaustavsinha, we were both typing at the same time!
you are right, i agree with you about being scary/evil BUT still a place of worship (however evil that might be!) although, i think i want to hit something in the middle.
i want it to seem scary but potentially misunderstood by outsiders.
i picture a civilization of people who built their temple around this huge animal that seems terrifying but actually protected them! see where i'm going? that's what i'll try to convey in the carvings and/or hanging banner artwork. maybe even some tropical flowers around the front would help with that...

i'll be coloring it with more of a dusk feel. once i find a good sky i'll start populating some of those colors around the scene.

i still want to at least block in 2 of the other sketches as well but i keep coming back to this one... hmmm.

back with some progress. i want to work on this some more but it's almost 5:30am here so i figured i would post where i'm at and then get some rest so i can function when i wake up...

i had work to do most of the night but i collected lots of images here and there between renders and save times. once work was done i tossed a heap of images into my painting and started experimenting with placement. please excuse the poor masking and bad color matching for the moment. i'll be doing lots of those fixes in the upcoming days.
i loosely painted some more on top of the progress to show a little more of what's to come.

by the way, i think i'm going to ditch that island thing popping up out of the water. it's super distracting to me. maybe better with some level adjustments.... ok, no more ramble, time to sleep!

Wow, great progress! Really fast too - 5.30am!!! that makes a long day, hope you don't have to do that too often.

I think the piece is looking really good, I don't think you need to loose the island - once the levels are adjusted I think it will fit in, but I would also perhaps move it too the left so it was seen in more of a silloute (I can never spell that word, but you know what I mean!)

Composition wise I think it looks cool, but at the moment my eye is being dawn into the distance and off to the left, I think moving the island will help, maybe I would add another couple that get smaller as they head in towards the centre of the image to help push the eye back in.

Great progress - you'll be finished pretty early if you continue at this rate!

All the best

Tim

Thanks Tim, great suggestion! My eye does the SAME thing yours is doing (going straight to the left side of the image) which is NOT what I want. GOOD suggestion on moving that island to the left!
I just scrolled up and compared this version to the last version and it looks like i had it over there in my concept which i totally failed to follow...

Lots more running around today, hopefully i'll get time to squeeze in some work on this tonight...

thanks again!

great stuff. I really like this last post. great work. The colors are better than the fire orange colors in the previous post. This feels like what you were going for. The misunderstood worship place....it is working

spent some time tonight working on a 3d model for my scene. trying out mudbox. taking a little getting used to most of my experience with sculpting programs has been with zbrush. controls are almost the same as maya so it's not too bad (even though i'm more used to 3ds max)

i blocked in the model in max, then exported to mudbox. i have a little more work to go with the sculpting then i'll bring it back over to max and render it up. have to go look at some tutorials tomorrow on exporting displacement maps from mudbox to 3dsmax.

also painted some of another concept (second from bottom) i'll post that tomorrow or the next day and hopefully an update of the skull temple with some 3d components.

hey Gordon, it's a great sketch that you have chosen out of your set. It has a fantastic dramatic feel to it.

It is my humble opinion that if you could have a view of a larger temple at the distant view so as to show what the huge walls are hiding or preserving, it would add even more drame to your scene.

The gorgoyle looks very cinemtic and masssive. You have a nice sculpture too.

keep it up man and good luck

Oh man! These two sketches are looking fantastic, and so pleasing to the eyes! I personally like the last sketch (bottom); although, the lighting on both the new sketches look simply AWESOME! Would like to make a visit to these places (if they exist in reality LOL)! I hope, you get time to develop these sketches!
