So here's what we want to see: Civilization in space. Show us what your vision of an alien civilization would be. You are not bound by any of the earthly limitations regarding gravity and such, so let your designing skills run wild! Floating cities, teleportation centres, alien flora and fauna,intergalatic rockets and ships, what else can you come up with?

Size of the Matte Painting: Your final image has to be, a minimum of 1300 x 700 px in size. The resolution must be 300 dpi. But for your WIP images, you can submit images smaller than the above specified size.

Note: On March 18th, 2009, a Final Entry thread will be posted, where the contestants will be required to submit their final mattepaintings! It is mandatory for the contestants to post their final entries in this thread in order to be eligible for the judgement by the panel of honorable judges!

So far I think artist are misunderstanding this challenge or maybe I am. The painting is supposed to show a alien civilization right? Meaning no paintings on aliens attacking cities etc.

I agree with you completely! The mattepaintings should show an alien civilization. A civilization in space. Not aliens attacking cities!
