Hi abhi,

It is good to see ur interest in VFX.
If i am correct, u are really confused between the terms MULTIMEDIA,VFX,EDITING or COMPOSITING.

For Simplicity let us put things into two catogery,
CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and POST PRODUCTION

CGI
----
We've seen many animation movies over the years and most of them were COMPUTER GENERATED(Eg: Shrek Series, Cars, Kungfu Panda etc)
So whatever you see in an animation movie is pure CGI.(Classic animators, pardon me)

We've also seen live action movies like(HULK, Spiderman, Transformers) on screen. In these movies, Most of the sequences are shot on a camera and later Computer Generated Characters and Elelments are Added.Note that the Robotic characters of Transformers were completely Computer Generated.
So creation of Characters, making them walk and talk, adding simulations like fires and smokes can come under CGI.

POST PRODUCTION
------------------
After completing the shooting of the movie, the CGIs are to be added to the footages. Here Comes the POST PRODUCTION part.Generally it is known as COMPOSITING. Seamlessly integrating the CG characters into the footage is the job of compositors. Here most of the effects like smokes, fires, explosions are added.
Then the completed footages are edited by Editors, Editing is a major phase in the moviemaking, here all random footages are drawn into order to tell a story.

So VFX u are mentioning can be Generating elements like characters, make them walk, making explosions, fires and smokes or simply editing.
You are the one to decide which of things u are interested in, thing must be still confusing.

Now, roles of artists in the Industry,
----------------------------------

Modellers : They creates modelsof characters, buildings, vehicles etc.People with a taste in anatomy, drawing or sculpting can perform well.

Texturers : These artists adds colors and textures to the characters and buildings created by modellers. They paint the details of face, dresses etc. People with painting skills can perform well.

Lighters : When the characters are used in a scene, lighters are responsible for the lighting of the scene. They make sure that a evening scene looks like a evening or enhance the color and mood of the scene.People with a strong sense of colors and the ones with photography background can perform well.

Riggers : These artists are responsible for making a character ready for animation. They adds a skeleton to the character.Their job are bit technical.
Those interested in anatomy and logics can perform well in this area.

Animators : Animators are the artists responsible for making a character walk and talk. They adds life and motion to the scene. They should be keen on anatomy motion and acting.

Compositors : They combines footages and characters(Sometimes CGI) from different sources into one making them look to be the part of same scene.Good visualising skill is the Important thing here.

Editors : Editors tells the story of a movie by keeping the scenes in proper order and timing.A good hold on visual story telling is what makes a good editor.

Animation and VFX industry is really competative.Imagination, creativity and hardwork are the main investments for a succesful career in this field.
If u are really passionate about it, then your background in conventional art won't matter much. But it is highly recommended to get your hands on illustration, painting, sculpting, photography for atleast a short time before building a career in the industry.I have seen many artists learning conventional art after they take up animation or VFX.

About the courses, never get into traps set by unethical institutes whose only interest is in minting money.

I Think this would do for the time being.I am not comfortable in writing such a long post.I hope that, the info i provided above should help a newbee to have an understanding of the industry.
Also do search on the CGTANTRA as you can find similar threads about courses, job oppurtunity and renumerations.see some recent threads in the forum.JUST SEARCH.

Regards
SIVAN
