Default Urgent! : Where to study animation ?

Dear all,
I have completed my degree in Animation(where i learned they didn't had any faculty with sufficient knowledge in animation) and i was mostly into interior and exterior modeling and what i really want is to specialize is animation.

Now what should i do? I have three options
1.To learn from tutorials (i Know the basics)
2.Take animation diploma(10months) from local animation institute(Image multimedia) costs about 50k inr
3.Take PG diploma in animation from ICAT Chennai. 1 year 1.75 lk inr
Hows ICAT? Has anybody studied there? Their country head called me and said the admissions are almost over and only because i had graduated in animation they have a seat for me and i have to take admission before or on this Wednesday.

Sorry for the long query.Need suggestions..thanks in advance

thats complete Bull S**T, they just want your money. the guy who called you was probably just a cousellor.

do the cheapest course you can find, keep doing tuts on your own. Thats the best way to go. Also plan on what kind of demo you want to make for searching a job and start on that asap.

I'll tell you the method which I feel is the best.

Unlimited Internet Plan(512kbps or higher should be best) + Digital Tutors subscription. If you take 1 year subscription then you'll need to pay approx 25k but you'll not be restricted to any 1 software/subject. You get access to the entire library.

@omkarjere

thanks for the reply. That method sounds good.
I know the level of faculty's in Indian animation institutes are a bit on the low side.
But are these online tuts better than going to an actual college and learning from an instructor?

Online tuts are lot better than Indian faculties. All these trainings are done by good instructors. Still If you don't understand something they have their own forums where you can ask what you didn't understand many good artists + instructors will answer your questions

I have one more doubt does architectural visualization have any future in india.Well i had a chance to do B tech and I've done animation only because i loved this field.Sadly the institute i learned did nothing good(wasted 3 years and 1.8 lakh rs)and I am afraid to waste any of my money and time

I can't say about the future but as for today its scope is slightly better than rest of the 3d.

ofcos online tuts are better, because they are professionals, while indian faculties are mostly just students without a job.

arch vis has more stability and more money at beginner level compared to other animation related jobs. I know cos before getting into movies i was doing arch 3d myself (interiors)

you did a animation course for 3 years and you learned interior and exteriors ? and even after that you want to do another course and have faith in the knowledge of these institutes ?

THe final decision is yours. there is nothing wrong with going to icat. But in THIS line the collecge you went to NEVER gets you a job. What gets you a job i a good solid DEMOREEL.

I never did a course from anywhere, but because my reel was good i could get jobs. So if you think you can manage to make a reel better than anyone else learning by yourself then follow what omkar said, else join a institute.

Just know that EVERY knowledge that you need from beginner to advanced is available online right now, so its up to you to decide what to do.

Please clear some of my doubts.Does an animation studio hires more character animators or do they hire general animators? Is it according to their need i mean who have more employment opportunities a character animator or general animator? What about the salary package and all.

Its a bit of a hard question, Its true that character animators have a good percentage of the total work force but it depends from studio to studio. Where there is no need for them they won't hire much of them like specialist studios who only work on Architecture Visualization won't need many character animators.

Personally I feel wherever you go, you'll need modelers, texturing artists etc.

Animation Mentor can be pretty expensive.. I was looking into this myself and I found a good write up on three online schools and it compares them. It looks like there are some cheaper options. If you want to check it out for yourself here's the link to a site about online animation schools. I am looking at One of the options on the list, but if it is still too expensive, then Digital Tutors is a good option for beginners.Their site is here:

http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/index.php

I hope this helps?

If you love Character Animation, then join "Animation Mentor", otherwise Gnomon School DVDs and online training is good too!
