Unhappy help us pls.

Iam working in game development co., graphics and animation department we have to work for unity programmer, now there is a big issue that they always ask for low poly model with smooth surface(from 3ds max or maya without add any smooth modifier) means their requirement is low poly model but it should look snooth surface. now how is it possible because its natural in low poly model edges is always visible with hard line and if we add turbo smooth or mesh smooth then polygon will be increase and surface is plane so there is no need to add normal or displacement map.basically where we have to create plane plastic glass. so pls help us if there is any solution. Thanks advance.

Use smoothing groups to make the low poly look smooth(the artist should know this).

If you want the object to be totally smooth then use a single smoothing id on the complete object. Before doing that make sure you use clear all to remove all smoothing groups. It would be great if you could post an image showing the issue.

instead of using smooth modifiers try chamfering the edges only to get the proper smoothing. if this is also too much then u have to agree with the above i guess.....................

Hi Kaushik,

As everyone explained, smoothing groups is a good way in game art to give a idea for smooth surface in a low poly model. Here is a tutorial i found which explains in detail how smoothing groups work and can be used in the workflow.Credits to the author of the tutorial, Ben Mathis.Check out his site for other good tips and tricks on game art.

May be next time, before posting if you could prepare a image showing the type of problem you are facing. As we are all artists here, putting some kind of visual/image is a good step towards getting a more clearer answer.

Hope it helps.
