Arrow Why this Breakdown DI ! Advice for freshers

I was recently going through some demoreels posted here as well as some sent to my company and there were some very basic stuff i would like to point out especially to freshers.

There is a very good post in the sticky of Eduction and Career Guidance Section http://www.cgtantra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1740 telling what to do and what not to do.

I will further add to that with refrence to freshers what not to do.

1 Please do not have your name Hovering around as 3d text at the begining or end of your reel, no matter how cool you think it looks. A clean and simple text always looks more professional.

2 The first shot MUST be your best piece of work, not your name in 3d.

3 Please DONOT use any stuff straight out of a tutorial. YOu may think youre the only one who has seen that great DT or Gnomon tut but trust me there are a million kids who are also watching the same tuts

4 Breakdowns must be used cautiosly. If you made something very realistic, and you want people to know how it was made or what part of the shot was real and what was a plate, sure do a quick breakdown. But If its just a couple of objects in your scene and its very obvious that its cg then you dont need a breakdown. The viewer has seen that kind astuff many times and knows that its cg.

Also, dont use the word "Breakdown" written in bold text hovring in front of the camera for 20 seconds. If you haveto showit, be very quick about it.

5 Please dont use stuff with black or flat bg. Always put complete scenes in your demo. It always looks better.

Hope this helps freshers to make better reels. Feel free to add stuff that i may have missed out.

funny enough you wont believe, I read your post and then happened to see a lighting/texturing demo reel of another member and she proved you right! Everything you said now makes more sense cuz I could actually see how much difference it would make to get the reel right!

Thanks for the valuable information...i'll be having printing the checklist for myself

@esha YOure welcome. Glad i could be of some help.

@flintBird 1)I am assuming you are a fresher. And i am also assuming you wnat to be a motion graphics artist. IN that case please mention that at the beginnning of your reel. YOur name and what you ant to be.
2) I feel 1min 30sec is too long for you. Dont repeat the stuff at the end and bring it down to under 1 min

3) the first scene is difficult to read, i would suggest you remove it.

HOpe this helps

@Ankitjariwala I am not much of a character animator, so i cant say much , but i will still say that the dance sequence looks kind of odd, i guess cos you dont feel any weight in the character. Also where the guy fall on the banana, and the walks away, the walk cycle looks kind of mechanical.

I can oly point out that much, but do seek advice from a experienced character animator.

HOpe it helps

@raipur: IM not an editor, but your compositions/layouts look good. I suggest you change your reel name to just a "editing reel" or somthing, cos i dont see any compositing work in your reel. For spesific advide talk to a experienced editor and show him your reel.

@s.chinmay - 1) Please revesit the first 15 and last 30 seconds of your reel. Please read my post at the top carefully.

2) Most of your scenes are ach. interiors, with clean textures. If you aimimng for ach work only .. its ok, but if you wanna be a tex. artist outside arch industry, make some dirty stuff. Really really dirty stuff.

3) Most of your lighing is general, like the last interior on your reel. Light is coming from everywhere. THere is no mood. Try to use lighing to create a mood, that can make it look very intresting.

4) Show your stuff animated, not just stills. That will make your reel more intresting and will show that you can also do animated stuff.

5) YOur render passes take too much time on your reel. Make them faster and try to keem your reel under 1 min

Take a look at this reel to get an idea of what i mean by mood. Its by one of the members here, and in my opinion one of the best i have seen

Hi there,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and time.

just wanted ask you one thing?
I didn't get you here with "no compositing" on that showreel.
According to you only particles and blast etc are called compositing or only a bit part of it. As far as I know color-correction, masking, tracking etc are also a major part of the same. However, if you can watch it again then may be you 'll found that I have used particles ,etc as-well.

Henceforth, 'll name it according to the reel.

Kind Regards,
raipur

WHat you name your reel is entirely upto you. Question is what do you want to achive by showing this reel ? An editor or a compositor ?

Both use similar tools and techniques but thier final product is different.

According to me if you are using a couple of layers of partices and effects just to enhance the look or doing CC to make a frame look better, then its editing

but if you are using a large number of layers to integrate an element or effect SEAMLESSLY into a scene, and which is a major part of the shot, then its copositing

YOu can even do masking, CC etc in photoshop, but can tht work be called compositing ? Technically yes , but would such a person doing compositing on Photoshop be able to get a job as a compositor ? NO.

HOpe my point is clear now
