intresting challege.. but a lots of questions..
1. are we allowed to use normal maps or no?
2. if u need to deliver 2 x 1024 tex pages.. its its ok to deliver 4 x 512 pages?
3. Does the model need to be textured also.. or is it a pure game MODELLING challenge
4. Does the have to be triagulated?
5. 3500 triangles.. are only for the body or they are for all the props,
like the glares, guns, backpack, all included?

Hi all
I hav some qustions too:
1.Should we have to stick to the proportion or toony look of the concept or we can give it realistic proportion and volume.
2. can we redesigne(only putting the detail keeping the look same) the accessories and gears because the concept is not a detailed one.
3.3500 triangles.. are only for the body or they are for all the props,
like the glares, guns, backpack, all included? (thanx savio)
4. Can we play with the color scheme

Hi Guys. Good to see your interest in the challenge and sorry for replying them late. Here are the clarifications, let me know if i am not clear about them.
do we have to strictly stick to the sketches or are minor modifications allowed?
Minor modifications are fine, but we would like to see your skills in closely interpreting the concepts into a 3D character model.
Thats really nice challenge......
I just got a query........Why cant we use a normal map??Although it is used widely in games!!!!!!! dont know much ........may be a silly question
And can we use zbrush for modeling and texturing and then create the model with the given specification??........wnother one
Best of Luck to all
Oh yes, Normal maps are widely used on Next-gen consoles today. Up-coming challenges will give you a chance to work on Zbrush and Mudbox.
For this challenge, we would like to see good Wire-mesh construction and texturing skills using only diffuse map.
intresting challege.. but a lots of questions..
1. are we allowed to use normal maps or no?
2. if u need to deliver 2 x 1024 tex pages.. its its ok to deliver 4 x 512 pages?
3. Does the model need to be textured also.. or is it a pure game MODELLING challenge
4. Does the have to be triagulated?
5. 3500 triangles.. are only for the body or they are for all the props,
like the glares, guns, backpack, all included?
1. No, not for this challenge.
2. Each Character would call 2 x 1024 texture pages. Within which you can distribute the texture space as you would like to.
3. We would like to see a fully modeled and textured character model.
4. Doesn’t have to be triangulated, the mesh could be in Quads please note that the final mesh count would be calculated in triangles.
5. 3500 triangles is for the entire character which includes all what you have mentioned and can be seen in the concept. It is up to the artist to evenly and logically distribute the mesh. Again, same with the texture pages.
Hi all

1.Should we have to stick to the proportion or toony look of the concept or we can give it realistic proportion and volume.

3.3500 triangles.. are only for the body or they are for all the props,

4. Can we play with the color scheme
1. With regards proportion, purely go by the concept. Minor modification to proportion or detail should be okay.
As far as the style guide, you could again go by the concept.
2. If you were to add in more detail to the elements to make it look better finished, that should be okay but a complete re-design will be a NO no.
3. 3500 triangles is for the entire character which includes all what you have mentioned and can be seen in the concept. It is up to the artist to evenly and logically distribute the mesh. Again, Same with the texture.
4. Slight colour scheme modifications to make the model look better is fine. Making the model coloured drastically different from the concept is not welcome.
About pushing off the deadline, we will surely discuss about it and postpone it accordingly.
Gooodluck !!

Yes, for this challenge we would like to see a fully textured character model. An un-textured model is hence half finished and may not win a prize.

As a nebie I m confused about texturing the character...........
As mentioned in rules that we can have 2 * 1024 texture pages........
That means i have one texture sheet of color map and one of diffuse map which are spaced in those 2 texture pages???
Also r the texture pages like aligning the uvs in 0-1 space and then in 1-2 space???
Also color/diffuse means either color map or diffuse map or can we use both of them??
I m a newbie in game art

Hi Vinakr,
Answers to your queries :

Color or Diffuse map. Commonly both these terms refer to the same. For instance, it is ‘diffuse map’ in Max and ‘color map’ within Maya.
Mapping ideally needs to be within 0 to 1. Though it is not a rule for this contest. Please bear in mind anything beyond 0 to 1 will overlap.
Hope the above clarifies your doubts.

thanx for clearing the doubt............
I got ur point of compacting the uvs in 0-1 sapce but if I am looking forward to two texture pages.........then I should arrange the uvs from 0-1 and 1-2 space(correct me if i am wrong) and apply two materials ....one for 0-1 spaced uvs corresponding that part of the mesh and one for 1-2 sapced uvs which correspond to other part of the mesh???

You have said "One 2K rendered image of the character". Here, "2K" mean the resolution of the image or the image size. Please clarify.

No, UVs layout should be in 0-1 space but model will now have 2 material ids. texture will overlap eventhoug you shift UVs in 1-2 space. you need to change material IDs for faces.

Is it ok to edit the final render in photoshop to submit the entry?
And, for the previous query i will assume it is the resolution of the image i.e. 2000x1500.
Please, reply soon as we have only one day left.

Answer:
To clarify, UV’s for the second texture need not be from 1 to 2, though there is no harm if it were.
Phoenix0101:

Answer:
A little unclear on the question.
2k refers to the image resolution of the render.

Answer:
A little unclear on the question.
The model should use 2 texture pages 1024 x 1024 each. You will need to submit both these textures along with the mesh model.

Answer:
You could have a background but do not work over the rendered character in Photoshop. I hope this is clear.
You are correct, 2k refers to the image resolution of the render.
Wozim:

Answer:
Background is an option, It’s up to you to use backgrounds from any source. Please ensure that they are not copyright protected.
