This post is intended for all guys in india who want to do 3d in india i had wriiten a post earlier http://cgtantra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5213 but that was much towards the begning of my student life now i have finished my course and i am now working in a very reputed studio in india and this are the things i have learned in my short experence in this field which might be use full for novice and enthusiast alike . i can clearly rember when i was in a state of confusion a lot of guys from cgtantra helped me a lot and thanks to them i am were i am so i guess i just doing my bit for all the freshers . let me teel u about my self i right now working as a texturing artist and i have done my speciliztion in texturing and lighting from takshaa

well lets from the basic how is 3d divided into
first up let me tell u 3d as such is divided into 4 main parts
modeling
texture lighting
animation and rigging
vfx
now aging u can divde it even futher in case of animtion like u can just be a animator
or u can be a rigger or u can be both the third combination is rare but people with such talent are in great demand
texturing and lighting go hand in hand and usually u better know both if u want to do well also a good amount of modelling does help . texturing is a tedious task u need to have a good knowledge of the software for the materials and u need a good hand in photoshop good knowledge of colour theory and ya u need to be able to paint digitally . or atleast be a bit confident about it tradtion painting does help though my self i not so good at it but i feel one can improve in it but it takes time . lighting guys need to also have similar skills . texturing and lighting in 3d is a skillfull and a very technically intense task so u better have both sides of ur brain working for it

modelling well modelling may sound easiy and at time taken for granted but actually is pretty challanging because u have to be fast at the same time u need to have good understanding of anatomy and mesh flow

vfx now this is one vast field technically it is huge and it keeps getting bigger and bigger but basicaly it is divided into 2 major parts
1)composting
2)simulation(paticles,smoke,explosion,fluids etc)
primarly if u want to become a compostior then u beetr be good at lighting a lot of good lighter are alos master compositers and vice verse
if u want to go to simulation be ready to to tighten ur grip on programming

all said and done let me tell every body cannot do all the things one has to specalize in one with time he can do little of others but first up specailize

like if u are a modeling u can try little bit of texturing
if u are tex and lighting artist u should try modelling
if u are animator try ur hand at rigging
if ur are vfx guys forget it lot of thing in vfx na kidding try ur hands at programming composting

rigging is also one techncally intense line better have asthetics of animtion anatomy clear and also u need to be a geek with the software and know programming

places to learn in india

very few and far plz my sincer request to all people who want to make it big in this field this field is not about the amout of softwares u know it about how well u can apply ur self and the tool just become a mere instrument for what u want to do so plz dont go to institues which promise u we will teach u 3 3d softwre in 3 months u know waht i talking about go to a place were they teach u one 3d software but u learn it throughly

i have learned at takshaa and i know maya to the extent that i can get my work done comfortable in it trust me most 3d softwares are huge like maya and take years of expernce to know even 50 to 70 percent of all its capabilty so do u think any one can teach it to u in 3 months so decide wisely let it be a bit expensive but learn from the best place u will not regret it also use net and forums like this and amizing tuts to sharpen ur knowledge

software one need to know

primary software u should know atlest one

maya/max/softimage/ blender/ hodini/lightwave

know atleast1 get ur fundmenatl clear in one

secondary softwares

well photoshop, is a must especailly for texture artist, after effect and shake for compsitors ,

zbrush for modellers is must its realy a easy and nice software i lerned it after starting with my first job men its sweet and texture artist should use it too realy sweet

job well this field is all about demo reel and hard work u better have both and u better be a good person to work with . and u should be ready to learn new things

i hope i could help u regarding fees and info like that guys u got to go to website institue they keep on changing so u better ask over there hope i could help guys who need it .last but not list do spend time sketching getting ur basic of prespective compostion right all this things help rember the main thing is devolpment of good artistic eye and imagination all this is very imp in this field

1. Not every Studio is Huge that has different dept.
2. Broadcast & Ad/ series do lots of work and have tight deadlines, and prefer Generalist (who can do pretty much all)
3. Composting can do wonders in deadlines (so get to learn them) you don't need to have 300 lights to light up a stadium. (well this point is covered :) )
4. you can start your own studio, if you have contacts, know the right people and have business management skills.
5. today 3d is used in various industries in media. such as Games, Broadcast, film, E-Learning etc. its a big big world out there and competition is cut throat.
6. technology is your friend.

Hi Lightrig,
Your post has helped me in clearing a lot my doubts about the animation industry...People like u are few who share the real knowledge with freshers like me...Thanks a lot!!

I need to know something from u...I had enquired about a course in animation from an institute called AAG(noida) and iam interested in doing 3yr degree course....I chose this because they told me that the 1st yr wud focus on just foundation skills(sketching,basics,etc..etc)...2nd yr wud include several softwares(max,maya,photoshop,zbrush..etc..etc)..an d the 3rd wud be specialization in any particular software of our choice...

Do u think their curriculum is good or are they just looting me and wasting my time? wud it be wise for me to join this institute?

I am confused bcos u said that its a bad idea to learn various softwares cos they r vast in nature...max and maya take a lifetime to learn...At the same time they even promise about specialization in the 3rd yr....I am totally gone crazy...PLs HELP!!
