Hello everyone. I will attempt to make my rendition of Triton, the messenger of the deep.
Triton is a greek god born of Poseidon and Amphitrite - the god and goddess of the sea. Triton is usually depicted as a merman. So dont worry - I know the merman challenge is over :D
I will try to depict Triton with a trident and a conch shell, which are his usual accessories. I have settled over two visualisations - either Triton blowing on his conch shell or killing a huge lobster-type sea creature with his trident.
By the way, I suck at drawings - so excuse those please. Any suggestions are welcome.
Also, as this is my second human(oid) model and the first time i'll be working on ZBrush, i hope i can actually finish in time. fingers crossed!
Thanks everyone.

Hey dude
Nice concept...... So you decided the pose?
Here are some Real statues of triton it may be helpful to think about pose.

May be you should sculpt first your model then think about posing..
I always also do this. Finalize the concept and start modeling or sculpting.
after completing you can make the poses as well.
In pose I feel uncomfortable to sculpt because we cant use summitry in pose.
that is very time consuming to sculpt in pose.

thanks a ton, buddy. those helped a lot. although, i am going for a lil revamp ;)
say, any idea if we can have a multi-axis (viz. 3) symmetry in zbrush?

yeah there is a multi axis sym in zbrush 2 and 3, the shortcuts are
X for x axis,
Y for y axis
Z for z axis
so if u press X Y and Z u will get all 3 axes... and btw where is ur sketch.. waiting to see..

I am sorry. I must be sleepy when i asked that question. what i meant was radial symmetry. like for making car rims. i need it badly for this project! thanks a lot.

at last! some drawings - a lot of work for me as i am not good at em (i draw on ruled pages :( ) so i had to trace it all out on illustrator. my friends agree with the octopus look. i have made 3 limbs to relate to the name 'Triton'.
he is going to be killing a horrid sea creature (mostly a lobster). any suggestions here are most welcome! thanks a lot!

umm.. well what u have done is my version of poseidon if u see my merman thread, and its something very common to portray triton as.. how abt something that u would never believe triton would be like a sea horse.. horse are majestic, like kings, like triton.. i hpe ur gettin what im sayin...
and yeah zrush does have radial sym.. its just next to the XYZ sym option.

well i thought of a sea horse, but i thought i'd have trouble making a believable sculpture - as in that the final sculpture is supposed to be on a platform right? so it has to look believable that it can support the weight of the whole thing and a sea horse has a thin tail. but maybe i can depict him on a stone or something. guess i'll have to think abt it. i respect ur suggestions guys! :) thanks a ton!!
and yea i found the radial symmetry option on pixologic.com :)

i tried a quick sketch with the seahorse concept. any ideas on how to make it more seahorse-like without losing the balance of the sculpture (like whether a real structure like that could hold the weight) are needed.
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o320/jerazm/triton_seahorse.jpg
this doesnt look much like a seahorse :(
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o320/jerazm/seahorse6.jpg
this kind of structure would seem more believable, but i think a stone sculpture like that wold break below the torse due to the unbalanced weight of the body. just my guess.
help me guys!!!

tried something similar to the image i had posted. tried a static pose this time. but it cant be sculpted in reality so i don think i can use this idea. this is an SOS situation now

You might want to make the details on the back of the tail a bit ridged and with slight bumps,as well make it sectioned (make the tail out of a series of shells in the same way you would do a snake skin with scales). My thoughts, because the rough sketch on the top looks a bit snake-y to me. :)

oh yea. its going to be like that. this is just the pose sketch. i cant draw all that detail. anyway thats not the point. what i am trying to a achieve is a balanced sculpture that can hold its own weight across centuries. right now, it looks like a delicately made sculpture that will break as soon as a sparrow sits on his head.

Seahorses aren't exactly built like,say,sharks...they ARE delicate little fellas in reality too. You're going to have to slightly exaggerate some bits of him to make him look tough. Maybe armor plates? :) And yeah,my bad on the sketch thing, you can't put too much detail in it.

one more pose idea.
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o320/jerazm/trtion_fish2.jpg
i am going ahead with the idea of a fishtail. the tri-symmetrical octopus seems stupid and the seahorse feels too delicate somehow. so now i have to decide on the pose. any of the above ones will do i guess. or suggestions!! :D
