seems like im the first to start of.. im still confused on the complete requirement of this challenge but here is my doogle on the concept factors.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb284/crunk_cgartist/image1.jpg
yeah was wondering if i really needed to show the legs in this challenge.. as i had asked in the other thread.. does the model need to me a full body..
i want a much more angry expression.. ill add that at a later stage..
i really like the feel that the ref image in the bottom left is giving. trying to incorporated that style in a sculpt.
really requre some comments on the above stuff guys...
will post updates soon.. best of luck to everyone

Nice...
The face is looking very neat and nice.....
I have only doubt about the nose.
You are making a roman or Greek character so this guy's nose is a bit raised.
http://www.crystalinks.com/romegods.html
Follow the link and see all roman god's nose are bit long than this guy.
BTW the nose is looking very nice ;) but I think it should be similar to Romans.
Nice to see the updates.

Fantastic start ! My only crit would be work a bit more on his blocking before freezing the forms.I am alluding to the sharp creases at the clavicle etc.
and second I believe the noseplate will be straight from profile and not taking the shape of the nose.

supriya : hi, thanx for the comments.. its good to see u here..
digital 3d : theface is still in progress, now that u mentioned it.. i just noticed that the nose is short :P .. will look into it. glad u like the updates.
thomasphoenix : thanx, the clavicle will be reworked once the torso comes in place.. i know its looking to manmade fatless.. rignt now.. but looking to solve that once i get the face is a good state.. as for the helm as i was quite wondering myself if it should be straight or following the nose.. now that its cleared.. u will see it in next update.. tc

hi, here is an update on the concept.. didnt get time to get down to details.. but this is the kind of idea i was trying to portray.. need feedback on it.. whether is a good direction to go in, its semi chimera.. im doing a blockiing in 3d so that i can play with the scale there.. should have something to show on that by tommm..

WOW!!! i liked ur first drawings. but now that u have shown the true scale of ur intended final image, i am hooked!
will be fun sculpting something of this scale. this is gonna be one fun thread.
btw, i thought the chimera has 3 heads. r u intentionally not using the lion's head? because i think it will look awesome! just a thought! good luck!!
Crunk
01-11-2007, 09:22 PM
thanx.. well the orig chimera has 3 heads.. but since he are in wonderland heere... im trying to merge all the three heads into one.. should be fun.. well anyways this is not the final concept.. im still trying 2 other things.. since i also have a time constraint to finish this in.. and with all the work cominby at the studio nowdays.. ive been spending very long hrs at work.. but yet.. this time i will complete this challenge..
Crunk
11-11-2007, 08:35 AM
yes.. an update from me finally... been spending very long hours at the studio,, past few days.. so had a disrupted schedule on the competition.. anways back and here are some updates..
worked on the body.. modelled totally in pose. was grt fun, it has some mass issues but will solve that in the sculpt now. thats not the pose of the hands. those are just modelled placeholders.. i need to made a fist of the right hand.
worked on the face.. made the nose longer.. gave him that raged expression, made teeth, fun again, still need to make the changes in the helm as siju had suggested.

umm. since no one every asked me abt the concept.. im guessing that no one has got it as yet.. so here it is ..
Medusa, originally a beautiful young woman whose crowning glory was her magnificent long hair, was desired and courted by many suitors. Yet before she could be betrothed to a husband, Poseidon (Neptune) found her worshipping in the temple of Athena (Minerva) and ravished her. Athena was outraged at her sacred temple being violated, and punished Medusa by turning her beautiful tresses into snakes and giving her the destructive power to turn anyone who looked directly at her into stone.
Historically, before ancient Greece, Medusa was worshipped by the Libyan Amazons as a Serpent -Goddess,
In both Greek and Roman mythology, Perseus, attempting to rescue his mother Danae from the coercive King Polydectes, needed to embark on the dangerous venture of retrieving Medusa's head.
Perseus was then able to use Medusa's head as a weapon during other battles (which included rescuing Andromeda), but he eventually returned it to Athena, who then placed it at the center of her Aegis as a symbol of her power, and her own capacity to turn her enemies into stone.
Perseus, Perseos, or Perseas (Greek: Περσεύς, Περσέως, Περσέας), the legendary founder of Mycenae and of the Perseid dynasty there, was the first of the mythic heroes of Greek mythology whose exploits in defeating various archaic monsters provided the founding myths in the cult of the Twelve Olympians. Perseus was the hero who killed Medusa and claimed Andromeda, having rescued her from a sea-monster.
"ok so if u still didnt get.. it... that guy in the sculpt.. is perseus, the snake is medusa.. in a complete snake form.. and the entire sculpt is a pillar in greece.. as a rememberance to the war between these two great gods. and its in a rememberable head where hes about to get her head."

Great...
Dude you have done the main details in base mesh :)
Nice.. You are sculpting in pose I think this way is a bit hard than T pose.. because we are use symmetry in T pose but not in pose......
But this is good for final pose as I think after fully sculpting there is a bit problem to make the final pose....
Hmm.....
Keep detailing.... Waiting for updates...... Nice Base mesh..
1 thing more.... Are you making the whole things which you have describe in your concept art (that animal)..
Crunk
12-11-2007, 07:40 PM
sagiarts . deepam and digital3d.. thanx im glad u ppl are liking the updates..
digital3d : yes im enjoying moving vertices as much as in enjoy sculpting.. this way of working lets me do both.. yes sculpting in pose is a little tricky.. but its really very helpfull for learning masses and forms.. yeah after sculpting and repose.. u will need to again sculpt all the damaged areas...
no im not making the animal.. its was not looking visual balanced.. so its only the medusa and perseus now..

nice..but gotta say that the snake isnt living upto the standards you've set for yourself through the warrior; its not twisting around him naturally, you could probably lookup a good ref
it should be an easy fix during the sculpting stage, looking forward to the sculpt :D

Chcek the deformation of the snake, below the elbow of the warrior..
i agree with sriram, you should check some references of the snake to get an idea about it's twist.

sriram
26-11-2007, 08:46 PM
I would be lying if I continue the "looks great" spree of comments.
There are a lot of issues with the anatomy, especially with the way the forms are blending. The musculature doesnt go well with the cool pose you have comeup with.
Also, designwise, the sculpt does not seem like it can stand on that pillar, especailly with you giving it some cracks already !
And,is this supposed to be a sculpt made of marble ? if yes, the skin detail you'd stamped on the scales is not technically possible.
it would be great if you spare more time to work on the musculature. You got the proper muscles inplace, you just need to fix the way they transition.
Crunk
26-11-2007, 09:08 PM
- well first of all.. the pillar is bigger than whats shown.. just that its too huge to be in a view so i had to shorten it.. and i think that its quite understood that it would hold.. the cracks are only aroundthe places where the tail wraps..
- for the sculpt being of marble.. it wasnt specified that the model had to inherit material properties.. last time as in know it.. phoenix said they just wanted to see a model in pose..
- and now gettin to a real problem.. yes the musculature is weird.. n thats the reason i kind of shifted attention on the snake.. was lokin at the body for too long.. now ill be gettin back to he body.. so allthose anatomically wrong stufff is already on a list of things to do..
Crunk
26-11-2007, 09:47 PM

nice job with the scales.
about the body of the warrior, I usually presume that artists work on their pieces gradually, so if something is off at a stage where it can be fixed, its better to fix it there so that it doesnt lead to more issues later on. but if you do not want people to pointout what can/should be fixed, you should probably mention that .
the pillar,no matter how long it is,still doesnt make sense imho; but if its what you wanted ,then I have nothing more to say about it.
Crunk
26-11-2007, 10:36 PM
ok i think we are gettin on some weird channel here.. and i apoligize if thats because of me.. i didnt mean for unot to point out whats wrong, cause if its wrong then thats how it is.. there is nuttin else to it... just what i was tryin to say back then was.. that .. i worked on the body.. and at some point thought that what i had done was fine.. (stupid of me but a fact again).. so i went to the snake.. then vivek told me a lot of things abt the body.. at that point i did not want to leave the snake.. so now when im off the snake. im gonna get back to the body.. i hpe thats a better explaniation to this twisted tale.. after looking at the same thing for 16-17hrs.. its kind of weird gettin to know what is really off and not.. fine hpe u get the point.. dont want to start writing a big letter now..

You might want to look up the bicep/armpit area.I much liked your lower poly version had a very solid structure some of the details are taking away from that.

The material makes the structure feel fragile..you could probably tonedown the gloss and desaturate the color.
I agree with Thomas about the lowpoly version; it had a better feel to it than what the sculpted version has at the moment.
The blending of forms on his body, and the cape ; thats what you can concentrate the most in the time you have got left for the contest.

END NOTe
well, its been a great one month doing this competition, and the effort and progress of this thread is all in front of u, its been a great learning process..
and also quite stressfull in the last few days.. due to work issues also..but in the end i am quite happy with the final end product.. its much better than any work i have done before, i have just raised the bar for myself and hpe to keep taking it further in the challenges ahead.
would like to thank everyone here u has been beneficial in making this work good, if it was with their critics or with their encouragement, looking foward to the coming days..

nice job, the snake turnedout well, good that you pushed yourself with this one.
next time,you could probably spend more time on understanding the human/cloth forms;
a couple of points if you are interested :
# your musculature/cloth are not blending well ,mostly due the "blobby" feel that cropsup when sculpting.
# the front of the torso should be pulledout a bit to better hint the presence of a ribcage underneath the flesh [right now its very flat [prominent in this render > http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb284/crunk_cgartist/7_1.jpg]
