Guys, we are a batch of 3 or 4 who are seriously interested in character animation, but we aren't really taught hands on. We are just shown a few things, but as far as it goes to make a good piece of animation, we are clueless! we are learning 3Ds Max. We don't know heads or tails about the graph editor, except how it looks. Please Please tell us what do we do. Is there anywhere we can learn from, or is there anyone to teach us, where do we go??? Can we approach a production company like R&H,etc with our problem or do what. Please Reply.

well, It's only very few lucky people step into this field with good training ... most of the animation training institutes teaches nothing about animation but everything else in the software. that's because, if one is a talented animator and interested in doing it, he'll prefer working as an animator in some production rather than being a faculty.. your case was exactly my case once i finished the course.. had no idea what graph editor was ..well, y talking about graph editor..animation was just a few written principles in a note book for me and my friends :)

what we did was ..we stayed back for some time..didn't search for job.. bought the book 'Animator's survival kit' and some other books.. collected as many tutorials on animation as we could and we practiced ..well, almost 1 year .. and after that, when we became confident we can do it..we made a showreel, went to apply in production..and it was all easy to get into a job.

i don't ever think the one year i stayed back as the dark ages of my life..actually i never enjoyed doing animation after or before that time..if u got the guts, talent and patience..go for it.. that's my suggestion..may be u won't need a whole year to be good... but it works.. getting some strong basics is all u need to step into production as a fresher.

dude..no advice there... i was just sharing something i tried and became sure it works...:D the only thing is a bit patience..don't look around and sigh " uh, my friends gone too far in the career" ..but look at your old works and new..and see how far you have covered your learning :D that's what kept me inspired always.. ;)

Hi...Yohanw..

I came across graphiti school of animation few months back when i was searching for the specialization course in animation...They are offering a high end animation course called G-CAT Expert which focusses on Animation production specialization's for a duration of 6 months..The specializations they offer are

Modeling,Texturing,Rigging,Lighting and animation...u can choose any one specialization and learn that for 6 months...i have seen the course contents...its really strong...and i had the opportunity to talk to some of the old students...But they are offering this course only to someone who can show a portfolio or show some level of animation knowledge..

I feel i shud talk to them as u r aware and have knowledge in this field...I am still making my portfolio..and looking forward for this course...If u wanna visit the website...log on to www.graphiti.net

Or if you can afford it, join the "Animation Mentor" course. They teach you all the basics of animation from scratch.

Find a good professional animator in mumbai. Try to learn from them personally. somehow....... may be go to his house on weekends, etc etc....... Since you are 3-4 guys it would be easy as a batch . Use tanra, you can start another thread to find if any animator can teach you .. (of course see his work before u commit... hehe)..

if that doesn't work, then i second Graphic crap ....

enquiry in Graphiti school.
they have got campus placement and all the students are now in hard core prduction and no more in traineee level in various studios.

talk to them once.

Hey yohanw,
I am completely agree with graphic_crap, i'd like to suggest you to learn the basics art of Traditional Animation from scratch ,if you can afford buy some Books like " Animator's Survival Kit" or if possible join MAAC in Andheri ,its really good and Helpful .Always remember try to learn the concept rather than fighting with software....

All d Best....

hey friend,
definately, you try to learn the concepts rather that learnign the softwares. as software can be learn in fraction of second, but if your basics are right you can learn any software.

Maac is good heard a lot about it.
but also enquire about Graphiti they seems to have campus placement and also Ram Mohan ( Father of Indian Animation) takes lecture.
i don't thnk no one other than him can guide us better on concepts that he can
that's my opinion.

just enquire at few places and then take your decision.

Hi karun_shellan,

See there r few things which you can do without using curve editor. but in most of the cases you have to do animation modification with curve editor. infect most of the things like modifying curve, timing, curve flow, looping etc. you can do only with using curve editor. so if you want to become a good animator you should know curve editor properly.

There r so many architectural company in India also abroad. just type architectural rendering or architectural company then you will get so many good companies. for applying in architectural company all you have to do that create your portfolio which has so many architectural works. like walk through, still rendering, photo realistic rendering of any architectural building. also that would give u advantage if you can understand architectural drawing. also thats required in some companies too.

you ask me any question directly at jatin@digitalglow.net anytime.

Have a nice day

Regards,
Jatiin Soni

its good to see that experienced people like Jatin are ready to help out here. Cheers dude..Well about me, I am currently doing a Masters degree in Animation at Depaul University, Chicago. Even I am aiming to become an animator.
To speak about learning, graph editor is not a big deal but the main thing before learning it would be getting yourself very well acquainted with the principles of animation. That is where it starts and ends for an animator. Read, animators survival kit until you survive as an animator. It is really helpful to learn animation. You can even show off your 2d animation work and get hired in a company. The main idea here is to show how good you are with using the principles of animation and not how good you are with the tool.
I know, many institutes in India teach only the tools. But, I was back in mumbai last month and went to Graphiti to see what they have to offer. ( i have my cousin enrolled there.) and they really teach you everything you had like to know. If you know the tool go for a specialization course there. (my personal opinion guys)...if you wanna ask me anything out, mail me at amit2403@gmail.com
Though I dont have experience in working but, i have quite a handful experience of learning..:)
all d bst guys...tc...
