I like to design my own furniture at home but I don't want to go through the trouble of learning AutoCad or a full CAD application. Couple of my friends at aquabot (http://www.aquadist.com) do know how to work on the application but it’s a bit complicated I heard. I want to 'draw' my own chairs, desks, cabinets, in 3D. What software would you recommend I use?

I don't think it would help much, but I would say go for learning a program that teaches you some fundamental concepts of 3D,like 3ds Max. I know,I know...you said "no Autocad", but seeing as you might be only touching on the basics of each section of the 3D world - lighting, texturing, modeling and so on, it would be preferable to do in 3ds max. Yo udon't have to go to a professional course or anything if you have a real passion for learning it,which may count on the plus side - you could use the 3ds max bible (Usually by Kelly Murdock) and also browse for resources on the web.. plus,it might also help to go to a site like Turbosquid, download a freebie models of chairs and cabinets, open them in a 3d software and analyse them to see how it was built and all.
