Hi everyone, I had done a painting of Alpacino, a few months back, and now, I decided to do the same thing in 3D. The base mesh was modeled in max, taken to zbrush for detailing, and then rendered in max, with displacement and normal maps applied to it. Photoshop was used for texturing and post production

I aimed at getting a sort of oil painting finish to the image
I'll post some Wireframes and zbrush snapshots soon. Please send in your in critics on my work

If this is 3D Work.. then this is AMAZING! The head is looking really nice and has some resemblance to the great Al Pacino.. The shoulder area appears to be strange or it could be because of the orthographic shot..
anyways, post more screenshots and also the wireframes.. it would be really nice if you could explain the procedure that you used to achieve the oil painting feel.. Good Work!

Some resemblance to Al pacino. Thats quite inspiring. Thank you. And here are some wires, that might convince you. The images below are WIP images, and I've made some changes after this.

Ok, and here are the texture maps

For the bump and specular map, I was inspired by an image posted on a german site. The render is out of max, and the image has gone through a layer of paint over in photoshop, with a trust worthy wacom. There are certain problems that everyone face in getting displacement and normal maps to work from zbrush. Another time consuming process is setting up the sss. These two can be tweaked forever. However, not entirely satisfied with the results these two produced, I did a paintover in photoshop, to enhance minor details. The oil painting feel is the effect of everything combined together, the render, the paintover and the postprocessing.

Xtremly good effort pal .. Was noticing the different things in this image .. good attention to details like his nose bend at the tip n all ..
But one thing that could put more into him would be that right now his chin is bit flat and makes the face looks more squarish,If u could make the face more longer and his chin more v shaped it would look cool...
Good work though

Hi everyone... Thanx for the replies. The tie was annoying me a bit, the right end of it looked a bit distorted. SO I corrected it. Also added a bit of shine to the skin

Prav_Pk, thanx. For the hair and moustache, I tried lots of things like max hair, and then sculpting out the hair in zbrush, and finally i used planes with alpha maps applied to them. Even after this it wasn't too appealing. So, I ended I used it as a reference and ended up painting a lot of details. Since it is an image, anything counts. For the mudbox tutorials, there is an ever trustworthy youtube. I use it a lot for video tutorials.
okaland: thanx, but Al pacino's chin is like this. I don't think I can change that.
vaibhav shah: I tried a vignette effect on the image and the effect has turned out quite well, but it seems to have eaten away some bump. I liked the effect, so decided to keep it.
And finally, my work has been accepted in the award gallery of sync3d.com. have a look. Yaaaay!!!!

nice work vikram, the final outupt is cool but I notice that the model without the texture/paintover has little resemblance. Also you could surely make better use of the UV space in your maps,I see that the actual face is occupying roughly 25% of the space !
anyways,good job

graphic_crap, thank you for the reply. Sriram, I had a look at your website, pretty cool work. I'm very lazy when it comes to personal work, and I don't really care about accurate texture space utilization for personal work. And regarding the resemblance, the same questions had come up in other forums as well. I'm pretty much sure, its the hair that makes a hell a lot of a difference. I have also tweaked it a bit after the zbrush stage (the pics posted in this thread). Please have a look at my "making of " at

or
