model with out reference

I am learning maya for the last 4 months . Now I am started to model a character without reference ( only using front ref) ( actually I don't have the side ref., but very much eager to model the character ) . But ended up with a bad lips & cheek . anatomically other body parts are correct. In order to maintain detail I extensively used edge loops. therefore I want to know that how much a modeler depend on ( side , front , top ) reference & need tips on controlling polycount . Is that possible for a experienced modelers to model without using a single reference.

i would like to give answer to your quetion, without reference images modelling is big challege, but as u said u have front reference, u can imagine left reference by seeing photographs or ur friends , try it
