hey guys..didnt wanna bounce the old thread from last year..so thought i'd make a fresh post on this..
i wasnt happy with my rendering of him last yr and always wanted to
rework the model ad texture...finally found the time to do so......
done in max7.....rendered in scanline....nuthin fancy...no advanced lighting.......
will post any references or WIP work later(its 6am!!)........hope u like it:)
Image Edit(18/10/05)-Hadnt realised i had updated the image here
although i had touched it up months ago......not really much of a point
since things might change soon....but worth a show anyways!!http://www.cgtantra.com/forums/smileys/smiley1.gif
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7850/hanuman15sf.jpg
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4158/hanuman26jv.jpg
since a lot of ppl have been askin me about the design lately.......decided to post the character design process and research in
here too...beats relinkin u guys...so here it is...the character study
on hanuman....and design workflow...
the shiv puran mostly has hanumans history and background...not much on characteristics...
the
valmiki ramayana(kishkinda kanda and sundara kanda) describes most of
hanumans characteristics with a short history comin up in the uttara
kanda.....
to be brief...it describes hanuman
as a wise ...highly knowledgeable vanar.....but his appearance
completely throws u off guard.....only when he speaks is his intellect
known to all......to add to that...hanuman was a shapeshifter to a
certain extent and hence could appear in various forms depending on the
occassion(he first apears as a brahmin to ram and lakshman......the
reason he looks brutish is for two
reasons......firstly his eyebrows....the dip in them due to constant
contemplation.........and the second due to his broken/swollen jaw(he
derives his name from this)....his jaw was broken when indra hurled his
vajra at him as a child......hanuman fell on a mountain and his left
cheek bone /jaw was broken........as far as anger and confidence is
concerned......hanuman was cursed as a child by rishis(due to bein
extremely naughty) that he
would have to be constantly reminded who he was..else he would forget
and think that hes just another ordinary vanar......thats one of the
reasons he was always in contemplation and thought......e.g. on reachin
the edge of india...he had to be reminded by jambavan who he was...only
then did he decide to take off to lanka......in contrast to
composure....before takin off he roared out into the skies threatening
all life...and said that he would go to lanka and bring sita back....or
search the heavens....or else tie up ravan and bring him to ram for an
explanation....and if none of this was to happen...would tear out lanka
itself and bring it to india.....it was this loss of memory that
usually brought a brutish persona to hanuman........
as
far as a match of strength is concerned....it was difficult to measure
his strength...coz there are various references...but for
example.....garud's strength is given as...his one feather can lift the
entire earth with all living beings and gods....and in
comparison....between a face off between hanuman and garud(much after
ramayan) hanuman is said to have wrapped garud in his tail and flung
him back all the way to vaikunth
as far as his costume is concerned...its true that u've never read
it anywhere.....coz it aint written anywhere........coz in fact...in
the valmiki ramayana...if u go by certain descriptions of hanumans
grandeur......u can come to a conclusion that he actually wore
nuthin...no clothes at all...just a girdle cloth(langot kinda
thing)..........but i tried givin him a look....coz
if u follow every little detail word to word...wheres the fun in
that???huh!!:)........then i wouldnt be actually designing the
character....just makin a picture of a story......and ofcourse ....a
lot of indians would tend to flare up!!.now lemme explain the
costume....the dhoti is standard......the gaurd on his arm is a
standard warrior costume.....a shield for the non-attacking arm....u
find it on a lot of warriors......*he belonged to a forest tribe, and
the minister to sugreeva.....therefore i tried to show his designation
and seniority by using forest artifacts.....tried feathers first...but
then moved to teeth*(This was inmy older design..u wont see it in the
above image)...coz it suited the look well....u might think this
was not suitin his behavour....but lemme correct the
misconception...that he "wasnt" a gentle giant during the
ramayana....his anger was immense during the war.....i tried to put in
the teeth to show off as trophies of demons killed by him.....(usually
this kinda system is used to show seniority in tribes.....).....and
didnt wanna add the crown...coz that was kinda cliche......the gold was
put in in a rugged and unpolished sort of way......more like raw
gold.......low on the visual arts(though hanuman was a great
musician/artist)........so thats the whole deal with the
costume..........
a
little more on the concept....i've added canines on hanuman...but
i guess no indian would accept this since they already complain on
his brutish appearance.....i've used a skull ref of the indian temple
monkey also known as the "hanuman langur".....u get a pretty fair idea
on ur standard vanar if u watch documentaries on this animal......and
i've let the bottom teeth come out cos of the swollen jaw...
as
far as the LOTR look(from a reply on an earlier thread)....just was goin through an untouched section of
the yuddha kanda in the ramayana...and gotta tell u.....readin the full
description of rama's entire army of ferocious bears and huge menacing
monkeys...the image in my head was nuthin less than LOTR..(it is
mentioned that all the generals were invincible in their own
right.....of a fairly divine nature......and were so charged up that
they wanted to take down ravans army single handedly.....some tribes
had a history of beating down and killing elephants...they had a
history of enmity).....think about it guys...http://www.cgtantra.com/forums/smileys/smiley1.gif

ok im not the kinda guy who says nice work so m going straight at it...

I think you would do justice if decrese the hair length of the character.. i know you wanted this version of hunaman look diffrent that the other potraits that you see all around.....
All i can see is hair... what ever happend to that well buit character of yours..
i would also suggest a clean up of the hands

I reall can't tell what time of the day it is... the whole thing ..the
background along with your character does not match.. the least you
culd have done was added some fog...well i do expect that in the next
render...

and why does the wind only efffect the Hair on the head only..i cant see the force of nature reacting elsewhere...

Iam sure that you have taken lots of pain in working on this but you gotta do smthin bout that hair.. the rest well its nice....

hey hell, nice work. but the hair and fur has hidden ur amazing modeling work.... the models were really amazing.

no, this will not be accepted. i cant see all that beautiful modeling go to waste..

goli3d: when u tell hell to read more about hanuman, u dont know what u r gettin urself into..... and yeah, where are the horns, i dont see any.

you have taken the effort , but i think you have to work on it some more ,
i agree with everyone with the hair part .. its a till too
much , the background doesnt suit . and you cud
reduce the bump in his weapon.

OK straight to points:-

1. Make the hair just a bit less ...... maybe of 60% of what you got there. I agree abt the fact of hiding ur main talent ie modeling skills ........ plz show it off since u rock in that.
2. I never used shag-hair but could you trim the hair a bit to a> make the modeling more visible; b> make ur Hanuman less junglee and less ugly.... LOL
3. Compositing ........... yeah man ofcourse. You sure can say it doesn't really match. Use some kind of slight sunlight and put a match-able BG. I really dont know why it doesn't match .......... has to be the lighting I guess.
4. Lastly, hey man I really like this version of Hanuman. Kinda like rockstar attitude. Way to go buddy.

hey....thanks all....

Soul:i've changed the bg and tweaked the hair...the image has been
reposted.....although the image on the right might look a little
flat..lacks perpective...but kinda late to re render.....but it was
required to establish the character on the international forums....and
the hair on his body s coarser...so i've just given it a puffed up
appearance....

Abarman : the lighting is somethin i'm still tryin to learn...maybe in
a few yrs i can get a hang of what goes n there...:)readin hasnt
been helpin so far

Dolphin....well..my basic aim here wasnt to show off my modellin or 3d
skills....it was to bring my imagination to a visual
front.....dont worry..i'll be showing off my models in my reel

Canndis: the bump and bg have been tweaked...hope u like it:)

Satan : the bg looks odd for lack of perspective as stated before.....hope the tweaks fix it....

i wont be reworkin this until i start on the short film again for which
the look will be older.......so this is it for now....cheers

WOW! That's a big transformation from the earlier one.
but IMHO, the hair needs to be toned down a bit (lesser density of strands and slightly lesser length)

All in all, you are a 'one man studio'

Your work is very, very inspiring..........keep it up!

hey andy...thanks man...well..the ref pose might look like soft hair cos i increased the thickness for the final render

canndis...well no offense buddy but i checked that link...and i'm really not sure how that was gonna help me.........if ur talkin of concept...then i suggest u check out my old hanuman thread

thanks a lot prithvi.....well i pretty much ignored the comments
earlier....but i guess i might as well say it...hair's gonna
stay...personal taste.....considerin i changed it i guess its obvious
it wasnt an accidental render....this
is what i dreamt up and this is how i want it.....no offense...and
thanks for the compliments but im sure i have a long way to go
hai vivek....i can see passion in ur work...good going...i mentioned
about lighting before...few more things if u r going for perfection:
the specular highlight of skin and lips are same..lips need to be more moist,
and if u r planning for animating this guy, make sure this long hairs
interact properly. to me, its gonna give u lots of penitration problem
unless u reduce the length and dynamic simulation will gonna take whole
lotta time. so be sure to do several tests before really nailing down
this character for animation.
best of luck!
hey there hells..

a nice full render with a plain white background would help a lot in giving crit..
which programme are you using? max?
My suggession would be to give variation in hair colour.. darker nearer
the skin and lighter towards the tip or vicevesa...that would give a
lot of definition..
also when doing fur.. a backlight (or a rimlight) is a must.. that
would give volume.. check out the lighting on garfield and try to mimic
it by placing lights in similar positions....

Most of all a nice clean set of renders with white bg (since the hair is darker) would give us a good view...
keep going...

25-02-2005, 02:55 AM
thanks abarman..well passions what drives me:).....i do 3d for art and not for modellin and riggin and stuff...
well....my spec map did have a higher level on the lip area...but i guess it wasnt enuf...will check it out....
as for the hair...well i wont be animatin him.....this was made purely
for a still image....on a prallel front i'mm workin on a short
film...which is stylised(so thats a different version on hanuman again)
and the hairs goonna be different there(white cos hes gonna be old..)
and i'll probably fo that with ornatrix or maybe shift the whole
project to xsi..cos shag gave me nightmares on this render....
thanks for ur tips though....u can check out my short film thread which is on hold, in the WIP forums

hi jnaneswar....well thanks for those tips....i wont be renderin on a
white background cos i wanted this as a single piece of art....if
somethins hidden or not clear...as long as it looks fine..my purpose is
complete....
yeah..this is done in max
as for the hair textures and lighting..well ur right...could've tweaed
it and tried a few different styles..but shag kept crashing so many
times that it had become a pain just tryin to find a stable renderable
configuration....so i dont think i wanna rework anythin now....
thanks:)

hey dude...
awesome work..love it.. I have read the comments above and don't have much new things to say..

It looks more like a yeti..than hanuman..But the concept like I said earlier is kick ass..Nice tex too..It looks like you have put a lot of effort into it..Good job.

Things that need could have made it stand out even more:
-less hair
-the lighting does not match so it looks like 2 different pieces
-the ornaments look like floating or forced upon...if you have hair and u wear something..there should be some fur repression under the ornaments...look at the pic
-the clothes look like silk with too much highlights...

I know you are done with this..but am looking forward to more kick ass stuff from you.

work when i try the hair with ornatrix or xsi.....until then..cheers
comin in here after ages...didnt know this thread was still bein bounced!!!

suneetsmausil.....i'm sorry if it offended u...but thats more ur fault
than mine......do ur homework on a subject before commenting

3d devil: thanks for the backup bro...i appreciate it......its hard at
times to get ur ideas across when ppl just refuse to think out of the
box!!
i agree about the minor changes...actually...a lot of changes as far as
technicalities go...but another time i guess...too caught up in work.

naveenshukla31: thanks for likin my work....but i will have to disagree
with u on the fact that..this is the same "lord hanuman" that u are
referring to....please read my first post carefully and u'll know what
i mean......."no where i'm finding it resembling him"..i'm pretty sure
u havent seen him in person...and every other time u relate to him is
throughvarious artist impressions....and not a photograph.....think
about it

prachi: thanks:)...yeah..it didi take a long time for me to first
research and then design hanuman......and i wanted to get it right
since hes my patron god!!!
about ur questions....
he gets his name after his confrontation with indra....before that he
was called anjaneya..the son of anjana(the apsara punjikasthala who was
cursed to take the form of an ape until a shiv avatar was born to
her)when indra hits him with the thunderbolt...he falls on to the tip
of a mountain and breaks his left cheek/jaw(there is ambiguity in the
tets about this) and hence gets his name..since hanu=jaw in sanskrit

about the lines u mentioned....
the first two lines are a form of praise(as the chalisa was written as
a poetic praise of hanuman) stating that the sages sanak....and all
other learned sages.....and brahma..and the other celestial gods and
the poets of the world cannot sing enough praises that are worthy of
u....

he third line means....that u intorduced ram to sugreeva and hence got sugreeva back his kingdom.....
if ur familiar with the ramayan....sugreeva was chased out of his
kingdom(where he was crown prince and his brother was king) by his
brother over a misunderstanding(i dont think i can go into too much
detail here.....maybe some other time)........hanuman is the one who
introducs ram to sugreeva and hence over a bond of friendship ram by
killlin bali gives sugreeva the kingdom that he was driven out of.
hope this answers ur question!!
Let me mention once more you have taken a bold step in
visualising our historical characters with more dynamism,
personality,attributes.....which is commedable!!!
Its quite tragic to see our fellowmen in the animation or TV media to
potray such characters quite passively, characterless, inert ,stiff and
predictable except in the animation 'Ramayana' which had international
influence and was beautifully executed.
Glad to see someone with a sense of vision!!! Keep it up!

me again i am a hardcore crit no doubt but dear

the kingdom belonged to bali and sugreeva did not do what he was ordered to do by bali and taking for granted that bali is dead he takes over the throne

but when bali returns sugreev just wont go off the kingdom and respectfully hand over the throne to whom it actually belonged

and since he cannot defeat bali in battle he hires rama (in a way ) and murders treacherously

this is the story of the battle of the bali and sugreeva

bali was so strong even rama would had a tough job killing him

hi vivek,

The image of Lord Hanumanji is awesome, but let me tell u few facts ,so that u can put that in your work bcoz after a so much of hard work u create a person or model and if something goes wrong in the concept or in the idea which u 've got than the final product which u give is of now use .

since u r a good 3d artist i would like to tell u something about Hanumanji(nothing what u had created becuase its flawless) , but i can give some information on Hanumanji's description or some references from vedas which i think u've already done but not completely becoz in ur image u have shown the teeth of hanumanji as like some ferocious animal ,though he was in the form of vanar but he could speak and he was charming and good looking ,infact he was not like an ordinary monkey which we presume to.

he was devotee of Lord Ram , finally i would like to tell you that there are so many scripture available but in majority of them u will find author's own opinion or speculation .

so get a copy of vedas which is as it is ......if you are interested to know more pls mail to me at muru_das@hotmail.com

nice rendering i must say...

but it misses the Godly - ness which our gods have.

one more thing i think u can do is adding the indian motifs...

the hanuman doesnt look like the Indian superhero !

The artwork rocks! It is very good and good to see the research went into it.Good to see a vision different from 'Daily Soap Opera'ish shiney look of the god.An abundance of body hair which aren't affected by the wind but never mind.

i will not criticise u for whatever u have done. it is so adorable. it does not make sense to reduse hair for it had been completly a wild of hanuman. as far as d background is concern that is completly justifiable. it looks as character is high in the farmament and it seems to clouds around him. im impressed .

ur works are good but ur dynamics potion ar overclouding ur main talent of creating good models but i think that above works are very good and concept r
superb on the basics of creating a angry warrior Hanuman giving a newer perspective of that calm old god.

yo i think this picture is awesome but you should put more armor on him :) If I ever saw Hanuman in real life, i would picture him to be something like this but with more armor on shoulder and bracers The Gadaa is cool The background is Perfect.
