Hello Folks.

I am creating this thread so that we can post our blender tests. Can the mods please make this thread sticky? Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
Satish.

I made a small test by rendering a scene in two layers. First layer consists of the diffuse, spec, col passes and the second layer contains the shadow pass.

I have written up a small document illustrating the process. Its available at the link below.

hi satish bhai

i have checked your pages yesterday

i want to render in passes

but its not about a single frame

rather a complete movie

since my work involves everything from A to Z

i also want to know about the efficient work flows

regarding the post production that matters a lot

while handling a number of frames ( avi or seq. images)

Hello Gaurav.

Frankly, this is one my first tests using compositing. So i will try to answer what i have learnt till now. First off, i read the following three articles by Jeremy Birn.

http://www.3drender.com/light/compositing/index.html
http://www.3drender.com/jbirn/ea/Ant.html
http://www.3drender.com/light/shadpass.htm

What I have learnt is that, in order to have a flexible compositing workflow try to granularize your render-layers and render-passes from the outset. Prepare background layers, foreground layers, object mattes etc., etc.,. Also get your shadow passes from different lamps separate so that you can control them in isolation.

That's all i can tell you now from my limited experience. Good luck with your project.

I have attached two more screenshots from my current experiments. I have also composited an occlusion pass.

Greetings,
Satish.

Also the second edition of Digital lighting and Rendering by Jeremy is outright excellent. Lots of advice/tips/tricks from the Guru. All of what i am upto these days is inspired by him.

Here is slowly ongoing test of capturing only the contact shadows of individual objects in a scene using ambient occlusion. the trick is to render only the plane in its own layer using AO and capture the contact shadows in a alpha channel. i ran into this technique accidentally. I am still figuring out a workflow to also capture object level contact shadows using render-layers. Will post results as and when i figure out.
