I would like to know what settings you ppl use for virtual memory.

As you know, the recommended size is 1.5 x RAM size.
So, in my case, with a 512MB DDR, I have my virtual memory set at the recommended size of 768MB.

I would like to know whether I should keep it the same or should I increase it when I am making a heavy render or something.

oh btw, I have installed 3Ds Max on a secondary partition.
Maya however, is intalled in C:

just keep it at the default setting. windows will only use the virtual memory when it has exhausted its RAM. and if its not enough windows will auto increase ur virtual memory. just make sure that u have enough space on the partition which has ur paging file. and i suppose u r using windows xp. so if u think ur renders are slower than ur expecations then go and buy ur self an additional shiny new ram card. virtual memory just keeps ur computer running when it has exhausted its RAM, dont expect speed from it....

regards....

Thanks, man

btw, just wanted to know.............will manually increasing the virtual memory size ensure that my rendering process doesn't crash?

For example, in my new peugeot render, I was using MR renderer and the scene contains around 1 lakh polys. With default values of MR, the render process was crashing..............after several attempts, I finally managed to do it (after disabling GI and reducing the FG photons to 10k).

So if I increased the default virtual memory size, would it make anything better?

{For best performance, set the initial size to not less than the recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory.}

ok, thats taken straight out of the windows help file

all the best for ur renders..........

Hi Prithvi,

Maybe you can check in your Task Manager if the memory limit is being crossed, while rendering. Even in that case, I guess, Windows automatically increases the V.Mem. size, as dolphin as already pointed.

HTH
