just look out dude that gold material, metal material also that green blue galss ball material!!

mental ray has gr8 control over bitmap type images(like jpg, hdri etc etc.) in 3ds max. Also i used one skylight and one directional light to simulate outdoor lighting and it is easiest way to control daylight with mental ray.(instead of rendering with "default scanline renderer with light tracer will eat ur memory!!!! )

Dolphin is right.

It still looks CG to me. You are definately usually default shading for one. Try bump mapping it too. and look at real life photos and try tpmatch those. Just because the software mental doesn't mean that it true to real life. You still need tweak a lot

There is no bounce light for one. So definately that makes look CG. Also the ground underneath the lamp should reflect some of the color. Which is why you need to look at reference

thanks pritish,

jigu, actually, i shud hav explained myself better.

what i meant was it does not look like its rendered in mental ray. mental ray is used to create bounce light, caustics etc, in short, realistic lighting. the effect which u got there can be simulated easily in seconds with a 3 point light setup.

Hi Jigu,

This updated pic looks much better now... considering you wanted an "outdoor" look. Now the only think lacking, IMO, is that the lamp shades look a bit too clean and smooth. As Pritish as already suggested, try to add some bumps and mapping onto them. The modeling though, is great.

Also dolphin, I guess MR can be used to create a non-photorealistic rendering. What's wrong with that? Afterall its being shipped free with 3ds max. I have observed that rendering times are much less in MR than in the default scanline rendering tech.

my my, what u saying, mental ray is faster than the default scanline renderer???!!!

discreet shud seriously think about revamping their default renderer then......

jigu, that image is much better than before......

Yup.. It is definitely faster... of course, not in all situations...

Now see this pic I have attached. This is a model I did in 3ds max, taking help from Mastering Maya 2.5 book..;) I used the ref. pics given in that book.

Anyways, the hair you see in this pic are all poly. Now when I try to render it with default scanline, it takes like forever, though the lighting is not even 3 point in this case. However, MR renders it in a ziffy. It takes around 50 sec on my 3 GHz HT, 1 GB box. Of course, I maybe doing something wrong here.. but this is what I have observed.

EDIT: Sorry for kinda hijacking this thread. Dolphin, if you want, we can move this discussion to a new thread.

i am not a max user so i cant comment on that, maybe other Max users can make sumthing of this.......

hi there man...
nice pic...
the second lamp one especially...
I think you should add a blue secondary light for the shadow areas and as a skylight..for a start.

of course.. a lot more could be tweaked,
my 2 cents...
