hey ppl, i last heard about vfs coming to india 4 or 5 yrs ago. i had
got in touch with vfs to get sum info about its upcoming branch in
mumbai. the representative even said the school will be in malad
(w), link road. i thought koollllllll ,
its very near to my place. then after a few months i get a mail
informing me that the project has been postponed indefinitely.
the reason given was this------> they did a survey over here in
mumbai and they found out that ppl here were not willin to pay for the
3d animation course cuz they they thought the fees were too high. "Rs.
3,00,000." the situation was the same for the other courses.
sumbody in the "welcome to cgtantra" thread said that VFS told him that they are not comin here due to the blasts......... wat blasts happened at that time????
dunno.......
ppl r wilin to shell out 12 to 13 lakhs as tuition fees over there in
canada but cringe at the thought of payin 3 lakhs here in india.
very well said dolphin.. i wudnt mind payin 3 lacs,, provided i get the same service wot other students back in canada get..as in 24*7 labs... people coming from the industry to talk to the students... experienced tutors(and i mean really experienced teachers who have actually worked in the industry)...

dolphin

how i wish they would still open shop over here????
i also wouldnt mind shellin out 3 lacs for the visual effects course.
frankly i cant afford to pay the tuition fees for vfs.... if i could i
would definitely go for vfs, ringling school or sheridian.
anyways, hey rocky, u dont come around here much nowadays, landed a job or wat???

yup..so the condition in india is that even if they wud've opened a franchise or even their branch, they would not be having foreign faculties. I don't mean in any ways that cg teachers back in india are not worthed or creative enough, but that industry exposure and the quality of work being done here is still better than india so the the teachers here have much more exposure to the right working environment and hence they convey the same quality and experience.

Well this thread can hot up a little bit cus of the different views and experiences. But the experience i had in indian studies early 1999 there in india...was not bad but still i starved for much more they could have taught me. I think there people have lost the hope for a really potential institutes as i've experienced there that as soon as teachers get better in their work, they leave teaching and join companies. I dont know about the current situation, but still i think the tag of having being taught in canada from the industry professionals will still attract more students than doing the course from there.

I study at Vanarts, and it really doesn't matters if its Vanarts or VFS, as most of the cg schools ROCKS here. But then too there are major flop schools here too, as an example the vfx batch in our school, is complete dropout batch from Art Institute of Vancouver, they all left that school in middle of their term, just cus teaching was worse there. My experience here is totally different as i already worked there in india for some time. I have some different plans than just studying from here.

In the end i dont wanna say that india dont have good institutes, nowadays condition is really getting better and cus of such a good exposure to outsourcing, india is into one of the biggest and best outsources for US in CG. Schools like MUV, Arena Multimedia(where i studied from) are getting better and some new schools are coming up.
CHEERS
<edited><editID>harshdesign</editID><editDate>38362.1026967593</editDate></edited>

hmmm, u r right about the foreign faculties thing.
i was told that the faculty would be indian but they would be specially
trained at vfs, canada. and visits by industry professionals from
canada would be common over here at the mumbai centre. but since the
project never came to be, we will never know.
they were gonna start the school in collaboration with modi international, i think.
dunno if it was supposed to be franchise or a branch, a branch most probably......

the industry function like this, wherever u go for interview(india or abroad) first thing they ask is showreel, & if u pass, then comes resume, but i doubt, whether it really matters whether u study at VFS or ARENA( i may be wrong, but from my experience, this is wat i c)

so, if u guys get a right person, whoz got the knowledge, & can train u in right way, & its not from any institute or college, will the students join?? or

do u all think, spending so much money & joining in a big college or institute, & not gaining the knowledge according to the industry standards, but still students prefer colleges only??

recently i met a friend who studied from abroad, but it was so tough for him to get a job in india, & finally je got a job in a studio, but not for a gr8 sal, though hez good at his work.

let it be VFS or SHERIDAN or let it be any canadian university comes to india, still its gonna cost huge amount, do u all think, still students will join there, rather talking or discussing with the right persons or forums like these, before joining????

to put it straight, how can cgtantra help the newbies to pickup the right college, or , the right institutes before joining????

ok, Never actually wanted to get into the arguments but here are my comments...

First of all, VFs is a good school but its not god. No school is god, they only teach you techniques (on equipments obviously) and the rest is upto the student. I've seen some good demo's from there and some really crappy ones. So, assuming that you get into a good school and they will do the rest is totally dumb. Apart from that, almost all schools (obviously except AI) are good and there isn't a huge difference in quality of education especially in Canada.

As for Vfs coming to India, I really doubt that as there are a lot of technical glitches apart from their retarted fees.

my dear...harsh design...these days not MUV/Arena even near to wutt MAAC is doing these days...calling professionals frm abroad...conducting seminars frm the professionals in the industry ....only MAAC is doin....

Yes not upto the mark of international/VFS ...but very close in some branches....

Yes its 100% true its all abt student...& techniques....

indian students are not bad,dumb...they r good...but only cream as everywhere in the world...Indians r yet to realise that this career takes/demands full time & not few hours and they gonna be in the sky r working for 30+ k salary...etc

one shud prepare well before entering into this field/other ...

and then start with full potentional....not half heartedly......

then only he/she will def. be reaching ...goal...

So just spread all around whosoever is joining or going to join this field that plan well ...work really hard.....i mean really hard.....

In few years we all r going to challenge the world....

What you say is completely correct. Only a demo reel would get you a job, and as far as the employer is concerned he only sees the work

But then the whole point of going to a school, is too learn from others, and not make the same mistakes. Here lies the difference between quality of education. If you were at Arena, they'll teach you where the buttons are, how to create a sphere, but artisticly nothing. And all this they'll teach you in 2 hours thrice a week.

At VFS, the first week you are not even allowed to touch a computer. You basically do life drawing and 2D animation, and our first assignment in modelling was to make a animal. Our first assignment in character animation was a jump. Plus you have classes everyday, from 9 to 7, and you get homework. So pretty much you have to work your ass off to finish your assignments, and forget about weekends. Plus the students around you are knowledgable, and helpful. They are always there for feedback, which is the most important ingrediant of a good demo reel. And what you say is also true, that not everybody's reel is good, but those who go with a humble, open minded and eager attitude do come out with good reels.

So if you can afford it, I would say definately go there, because you will definately learn more and faster than sitting at home. It sure was jump starter for me. Hope that helps

Pritish

PS:Don't do the Maya program at VFS if you are a beginner. It's just too hectic.
<edited><editID>pritishd</editID><editDate>38387.9271064815</editDate></edited>

These are good times to be a animation student in Vancouver. Just
ask Mei Yu. The 19-year-old Burnaby animator had her choice of job
offers when she graduated from Capilano College's commercial animation
program this spring. On Monday, just nine days after the college's grad
show, Yu started working at Vancouver's Studio B.

Animators not
only have their choice of studios to work for, they have their choice
of careers. The video game industry is just as hungry as animation
studios for young talent. Last weekend, Burnaby-based Electronic Arts
Canada (EA), which has hired 600 video game artists and programmers in
the past year, held an awards ceremony for the 25 finalists in the
company's Great Canadian Art Competition, offering jobs to all 25.

Schools
with animation programs -- Capilano College, Vancouver Film School, The
Art Institute of Vancouver, Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design --
regularly entertain recruiters from Canadian and American studios and
games companies. In the past year, Vancouver Film School was visited by
Rob Colman, animation director for California-based Industrial Light
and Magic (best known for its work on the Star Wars movies), as well as
representatives from Animal Logic, which has studios in Australia and
California, Digital Domain of Australia, California-based Rhythm &
Hues and Skywalker Sound, Toronto's DKP, Montreal's Ubisoft, Edmonton's
BioWare and B.C.-based companies Electronic Arts Canada, Lions Gate
Films, Mainframe Entertainment, Bardel Entertainment, Relic
Entertainment and Radical Entertainment.

"It goes on all the time
here," says Sheffa Siegel, VFS marketing director. "We work very hard
to make sure we have a good pipeline established between our programs
and the industry studios."

Companies looking for new talent are
taking steps to streamline the process. Vancouver's Studio B recently
hired a human resources person specifically to work on the company's
recruiting strategy.

"Talent is so important," says Blair Peters,
co-founder with Chris Bartleman of Studio B. "We went to [Toronto's]
Sheridan College recruiting, Capilano College, Vancouver Film School,
and to a recruiting night at The Roundhouse. Kelowna has a film school,
and we had them through here.

"Recruiting is big business now,
because we're competing with EA and Disney moving here. Digital
animation is very similar to the game industry. It's the same talent
pool.

"Everybody's got to pitch their studio in a unique way."

Rhythm
& Hues, a California company that makes features and commercials,
recently hired VSC graduate Adam Yaniv, who is currently working on the
feature The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and has also hired
lighting specialists from the school.

"We're seeing good reels
for animation coming out of Vancouver Film School," says Anjelica
Casillas, manager of digital production for Rhythm & Hues.

Nancy
Gray-Starkebaum, senior manager of recruitment for EA, says the company
makes regular recruitment trips across the country, visiting the Lower
Mainland schools several times a year.

Hey guys, i donno how old is this thread. But, would like to welcome all the latest indian students who completed / pursuing their course at VFS and post their feedback on VFS here again with latest improvement's or drops if any.

Your feed back will definetly help many artists who are planning to visit VFS. Since the fees now is much more costlier ( 49K CAD - 20 Lacs ). Its very important to know the transparent pros & cons of VFS before enrolling. I hope you all come up with genuine opinions and help India.

Good Luck !
