I heard MIDA in chennai is doing very well, a few friends of mine who studied in MIDA got immediately picked up at Crest, DQ and other places. I think you should try this first before going to Arena. I think they are called MUV Institute of Digital Academy or something like that.

if ur friend is young enough, better to join institutes like NID, etc., rather MIDA OR ARENA

I don't agree with you dynafx, until u have experienced it personally, I have a friend who has done his course in NID and hunting for a job since 8 months, so I would prefer an institute who knows what today's studios demand and get me a job rather than have a fancy degree at a fancy price but no job.

i meant NID, for the right basics. if not NID may be institutes like ZICA OR watever of that quality,

if u join any other institutes , who just teaches softwares rather basic skillset, maybe u might grab a job immdtly after the course, but , cant survive in this industry on the long run, bcoz, its easy to teach an artist about the software, try teaching art principles to an software guy, thatz where the quality loss will happen.

to construct better cg environment in future, the youngsters should be guided properly, i've visited lots of institutes , but more than 90% teach only the software

lol, dyfx, ur right,
let me add sumthin to ur last line.......
but more than 90% teach only the software ----- and they also teach only 10% of the software.

Again this can only happen if you have personally experienced. Arena or others I have seen have franchises all over and thus the quality drops substantially adding to the fact that they have no animation back drop or experience of international animation. I heard about MIDA from many guys and that they operate only from 1 center in India and their courses are really long, detailed and full time starting from basics. I have heard of another training academy offering similar courses as well but yet to get the details, as soon as I get it, I will give it to all.

hey oneguy, i hav done a course from arena, ameteurs teaching newbies, wow, watta combination .
dunno about the teaching methods of MID, so cant comment.
i know what point dynafx is trying to make here. first get ur basics right. a building cant stand without its foundation..

hey wait, i think one of my friends did a 3d course from chennai, cant
remember the name of the institute though. but he said the experience
was fantastic....
i will make it a point to ask him, maybe its MID. he works at Crest now.
i saw his demo reel, and believe me it was awesome............
See what I mean, not all institutes are bad, ARENA is a joke they are in it for the money only and more franchises mean more money and so is MAAC.

i'm not against any institutes, & i've personal experiences in these instit, either as student & i've worked in these institutes also, so, i made the open statement, & i knew exactly watz goin in these institutes, anyhow, for a strong showreel, its more of the individuals interests than the institutes alone, & if u have ur basics right, & with right guidance, ofcourse, ur showreel should be stronger

Actually
i think every studio should take in newbeies and have a course..and provide wthem with experience of studios andn how tyo perform well under pressure... . cause that way u learn a lot .. when i ca,e out of an institute (arena) i was a bigest dhakan around probably........ and only after i started working did u gain most of the knwledge .......... also one things for shure institutes just teach the basics.. they dont make u aware of a lot of things in the industry.

iced has a point over there, the studios must hav sum internship kind of program or sumthing. so freshers could experience actually how things are done in the industry. hey iced, almost all the ppl coming outta institutes are dhakkans, trust me. the first break is the most important. but u c ,almost all studios want their 'fayda' only. so they are very very reluctant to take in freshers.

sum solution must be found in this matter.

dynafx

i too agree with u guys, bout the internship,

we've taken lots of juniors, interns, lots of 2dguys, & trained them into 3d, these guys, learnt their skills, with pay in the studio, & jumped to other studios for double salary,, immdtly, after their training is over.

imagine, the time spent by the seniors, in training, investments like systems, power etc., to train the juniors, & these juniors without having any commitment to the studio or the project, they jumped to other studios, which is why, new studios might think bout training the interns or freshers. still, we went ahead, & trained more guys, not just 3d, even the commitment , project values, etc., whoever stayed back, r the real talented guys, who didnt bother only for salaries.

thatz the reason, i'm directly involving myself into the institutes level to create the awareness bout the industry requirements, & started guiding them

hope it works

I say forget Instituts... just ask some guys
thru this forum who work in a studio with good porfolio and time on
their hands to spare some time for you... and let the timings be
streachble.. and suit both the aprantis as well as the tutor... pay em
some 15-30k depending on whatever and ur done... no strings attached
