Hello everyone :)
been working on a human head for a while...working on character style. Presenting below is a render+paintover. I just took the object, shaded and lit it and then instead of painting texture maps, I just painted over the render in Photoshop.

perhaps I should have added this to the 2D art section---am not enturely sure as the features & shading are from the 3D object, but the texture painting & and lighting tweak are in photoshop<!--

Hey Amaan....

Now thats an awesome piece of work....The expression and the idea behind the character so beautifuuly represented... Nice blending of lighting and texturing.... Is it that the even the model is created by u...?

So, u hav actually rendered the face and then did the lighting and texturing... is it? Seems like a great idea....

Well her eyes speaks a lot...Especially the watery surface jus above the lower lid has been beautifully created...

Superb work ya.. Do grace us with ur terrifc work.... And wud b really good if u cud give some tips and tricks for the upcoming lighting artists.....And ya , i hav been through ur Lighting Techniques tut on the site and it rocks man...

Take care ya!

God bless ya!

hey amaan...good to see u back in here with some new work:)
nice piece...i had seen this method approached in a tutorial in
threedy...where a posed rendered model from poser was taken out and
painted over....the difference here being that this was modelled by u.
a few comments on this though..
this looks pretty much painted from scratch....probably the best use of
a method like this would be with a more dynamic lighting....with an
obvious 2d paintover of a 3d model.....with stylised painting over the
3d with exposed 3d surfaces....(like what u've done with the blue)
just a suggestion....
apart from that......
about the model......the nose seems kinda inclined to the right....this
is possible in reality....but as a painting this kinda takes ur
attention off the entire piece.
the right eye seems farther off rom the nose than the left...
otherwise a nice model...i like the unconventional upper lip....
the hair seems to be hurried through as it looks like plain strokes
done at the last minute....and it doesnt flow very well....needs more
inclination.......and considering the burnt out forehead....its not
showing on the hair.
like i said.....a nice piece overall.
lookin forward to more work from u.:)
thanks smooth criminal, nupsjain and hells_angel for the feedback :)

hells_angel wrote:

>i had seen this method approached in a tutorial in
threedy

this method is very common in the 3D matte painting world as well. also, have a look at Raphael Lacoste's (Ubisoft) work, which was posted on CGTalk yesterday, that uses similar principles.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=8895 4 (3D render--requires u to log into your CGTalk account)

http://features.cgsociety.org/gallerycrits/4029/4029_1137996 036_medium.jpg (paintover)

>probably the best use of
a method like this would be with a more
>dynamic lighting

not necessarily. it just depends on what the artist wants to do

>the nose seems kinda inclined to the right

I noticed that and left it there as it was. it didn't bother me at all. I've been working in the makeup & portrait photography and I see a LOT of variations in people's faces (these variations would be termed as 'flaws' in paintings--I don't really understand why it's like this). I have slowly come to change my way of evaluating faces--which is more open to variations now than it was before.

>
the right eye seems farther off rom the nose than the left...

my bad. put some extra eye-liner on one eye which is giving that impression. the eyes are exactly the same distance apart though.

>
the hair seems to be hurried through...

it wasn't hurried. i just don't know how to paint good hair yet :)
hey amaan..very true....i completely forgot about the matte painting
aspect .....ur right.....this method is extensively used in matte
painting.
the dynamic lighting part was just a suggestion..not a rule i would ask to follow
about the nose
quote:
[the nose seems kinda inclined to the right....this
is possible in reality....but as a painting this kinda takes ur
attention off the entire piece.]
so i wasnt sayin that it was a mistake in ur painting...just somethin
that "i thought" was kinda distracting...i myself dont completely
understand why these are taken as flaws( i have a friend with a nose
more bent than that)...the way i see
it...real life is never open to critisicm but art is and anythin that
is done out of convention is usually taken as a flaw in the artwork
which probably led to us seeing paintings of individuals with ideal
anatomy.usually references are posted along with a painting just so
that the viewers see a certain purposefully done aspect.
I've been studyin facial anatomy myself lately and have come across
"imperfect" faces, and have noticed that unless the painting or
image is otherwise "perfect" in all other aspects....individual "flaws"
are anatomical variations are seen as flaws by the artist.....(happened
to me every time i tried experimenting) so such variations are usually
backed up right at the start as somethin done on purpose.

now that i look at it...yeah..the eyes are the same distance..sorry
about that....its probably the inclined nose than the eyeliner that
made it look so.
about the hair....u can find some really good tuts on 3dtotal..orone really nice one by linda berkvitz on her site..

all the best....lookin forward to seeing more work from u.....
am not really good in characters, but this look amazingly good. am not happy with the lips that too midle portions looks awkward...Dont know what in it but it does seem to me. dont know am right but look more 2d . that might be just me :(.

other than that you are a amazing right. you have got some nicee work list on that site and good tutorials too :)

hells angel & Inxa: sorry for the late reply. :(

I take your point, hells angel. I have been finding it difficult to step out of the 'norm' and convince people that there is nothing really wrong with the artwork. it's just that people prefer a certain style, and anything that doesn't not belong to that style is looked at as being wrong. perplexing, but true...
<!--

wow!!! amazing work! Aman...love it to the core...the use of color tones gives it an amazing artistic feel to it...SUPERB!

my greatest flaw is that im unable to focus on the general aspect of light and shadow...

e.g. a daylight scene with a person standing in front of u, closeup...its 2:00 p.m.

how do the shadows behave??! how do i interpret them?? bcoz correct me if im wrong...at 2:00 p.m. we c really sharp shadows..rite? how wud u go about creating such a scene... IN PHOTOSHOP

Great wrk Amaan, Keep us all posted...

Cheers !! :)

hi aman,

just a few observations.

didnt find the eyelashes(especially the lower ones) and the eyebrows very convincing..

the shading on lips is making the lower lip appear a lil bit swollen on the right side ( is that a love bite??)

thanks for the post
