maybe we can post a simple rig here which every one can use...
as simple as IKJoe himself...
what say???

Hey Hyna,

Thats a great idea. Im in it...tho sry for the late reply. Actually i was planning to have a Animation Challenge on a big scale with a grand prize and a good panel of judges in it. So dint go for announcing anything.

But hey, lets start something to make a start for animation challenges. Lets check the responce of Tantrics and lets go for it !!

And yea, for a later thing - How about creating a small group of people on tantra to create a free rig for our own animators, the way the did it on 10second club ?? I can contribute for setting up the rig if we decide to make it in Maya. What say ??

hyenaman
26-10-2005, 11:56 AM
sure!!! thats a great idea...
we need a character design a simple one with just basic form and a
simple mouth for sync...no complex shapes...so we can steer clear of
issues with complex rigging and deformations....stick to pure body
acting and basic lyp sync...
i could upload a couple of drawings in the next couple of days...
what say???
.....We could also use an available rig like LowMan(pretty cool) if the janta is comfy with that...

Hey guys,

I am innnnnnn.......

And i think let people use what they wanna use as their rigs. what matter the most is kind of animation taken out of those rigs...........So for that matter whether it is lowman or packageman who cares let people use what they are comfortable with...........What we are concentrating over here is animation, if i m not wrong........

Cheerssssssss......
<edited><editID>Mayawhiz</editID><editDate>38652.0798611111</editDate></edited>

....What we are concentrating over here is animation over here if i m not wrong........

Sure thats right...but having every one on the same rig will make the
voting process more clear..there will be no fancy modelling or
texturing and lighting to get distracted by...only the performance
right???
Just a thought though...cos even something as simple as IKJoe can perform....
kudos....

hi everyone. a couple of questions to start with:

1. are the rigs going to be developed in max or maya?

2. when do we hear about the anim-challenge (is the thread up? if yes, can someone post the link.)

i am very excited about both, the animation challenge and the rig development. looking forward to some great stuff.

regards.

Hi RDX,

1) The Rigs will be developed in all the packages, depends on the expertise of Riggers on cgTantra. Maya, Max and XSI - all are targeted so that animators of all the packages may use it. Help us spread the word about this among the Riggers.

2) The Anim-Challenge link/image will be posted on home page as its started. Keep posting in your willingness to join up in this thread. We will start it as we get enough responce and decide upon a topic for it.

3) Let me know if you Tantrics want to be notified by a news letter about the Anim - Challenge.

4) For talking about Rig session, go to this thread > http://www.cgtantra.com//forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2376& PN=1

hey, howdy?! man...i truly missed a chance to chill out with you guys. i hope there is a quick get-together soon.

soo.....to all the youngGunz_outThere...

while an animation challenge is a great idea for experienced
animators...i hope there is a plan to start basic animation exercises
thread too. i am sure there are a lot of fresh talent trying to get a
grip with animation and getting them to do basic exercises will only
solidy their base.

it is very tempting to animate a character and try out different things
but it is all the more essential to have a basic understanding of the
principles behind animation.

its amazing how much one can learn from animating a bouncing ball.
timing, spacing, physics, personality, squash & stretch,
arcs....just about everything you will need to go head on with
animating a character. sooou....save the temptation for sometime....and
get the ball rolling. you will only have to thank yourself for doing
these exercises.

pehew!

hey hyena, sorry for the mini-hijack coup on your thread man....and yea...i am spreading the word already..
once the cut of time has passed..people will vote...maybe like the
front page poll thingie....make sure people dont vote more than once
for their animations...
and thats about it i guess...max votes = winner.ta da.
not many interested people though...

How about starting off with basic exercises like jumps, ligting weight, throwing an object and catch up with dialougs and bigger excercises as we get more animators jump into these sessions ??

Will put up a link of this thread on home page to catch the attention of more animators...

hey abhi....

i am talking about extreme basics ...wow! that sounds cool...'extreme
basics by andy_maxman'.....wow! this sounds even cooler.....;) lol! ...
just abitoverdosed...

( damn! howevever hard i try, i just cant get rid of this .... ) that goes like .... period. period. period. uhaargh!

back to the topic -

here are some of the most basic exercises which have been time-tested for years
for any kind of animation. you must do all of these.

1) bouncing ball (bb) - a soccer ball going boink..boink..boink from right to left
2) bb - different weights. a light and heavy ball
3) bb with squash and stretch - 'squetch'
4) bb - have it bounce of different objects or maybe another ball
5) bb - with a tail
6) pendulum - breaking the joints exercises
7) for timing and spacing - move an object in figure 8 arcs

| | |
  | | | | |
    |

things to keep in mind while practicing these exercises -

1) physics - the bb needs to adhere to all the laws there is

2) planning - doodle 'em up on paper before you cuddle 'em in your
graph editor (hey, thats yet another original...too much
adrenalin....oh! look at the floor...the creative juices are oozing all
over the place..okay..i get it...i got to stop here )

3) references - books..videos...real-life thats your 3 meal diet ( yea baby...you asked for it....by choosing to be an animator)

4) yea...dont forget to fasten your seat belts ...its one helluva ride

haveFun!!!
hii alll. one thing i would suggest is to keep the rig same for everyone. and the reasons are this... if one guy animates a human character and the other one animates a dog then i guess theres a huge difference between the two animations and it would difficult to compare. even if its just human still thers a possiblity that the rig might be either too sophisticated or too simple whch would mean a lotta diffrnc betwen the animations. one rig will ensure that everyone has the same challenge technically bt wide possibilities creatively. that ll be cool i guess and yes comparing and judging will also be easy and fair.

Emoting to dialogue.
Miming out a dialogue(No Lip sync jusy body acting).
Acting out a story or gag(described in a few sentences) the best way possible.(No voice track)

1. should we not have a seperate thread to post our work and get it reviewed?

2. The 'bouncing ball' idea should pin-point on what kind of animation is required. what perspective or footage time. or do we just do it the way we feel best.

3. just like the modelling challenge, should we not make it official in the 'cgChallenge' thread?

2. The 'bouncing ball' idea should pin-point on what kind of
animation is required. what perspective or footage time. or do we just
do it the way we feel best.

- Exercise 1: animate a ball bouncing from one side of the screen to another

- animate only in side view. perspective can come in once we clear the basic hurdles

- no. of frames is not limited (you do get to go wild - but remember the K.I.S.S formula - Keep.It.Simple.Stupid)

- maya users can use this rig Bouncing Ball Rig ( a download button is right in the bottom ). while max users can use a simple sphere and add in the s&s deformers.

- for free uploads - http://www.4shared.com/ (thanks - Mukks )

- use a frame counter script for better and easier c&c
http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/mel_scripts/animat ion/3781.html

- as to where you need to post your assignments...the admins need to step in

*EDIT - ball rig corrected
