Hi guys,
Here is my latest work. The Ferrari 360 modena. Probably just a few
renders away from the final ones...but I am still getting the hang of
Mental Ray and a few tweaks here and there.
This is my first car by the way. Finally I have done one too....

Manoj

Hi batcha,
Thanks for the comments. The main reason the glass is black is because the interiors are not done.
The tyres need some real work....the original map I made was too small....and now I need to redo it.
Actually the car is sitting on the floor (I checked) . Its
probably something to do with the shadow bias. Can someone guide me as
to where to increase the shadow map size?
amazing piece of work
u have done an awesome modelling and rendering job.
I would like to know if it's a Nurbs or a Polygon model. if U want to
increase the shadow intensity then u might have to increase the number
of rays in Mental rays Final Gather of Global Illumination panel. Or
else try to do some tweaking in shadow panel of the attribute editor
for the Light.
There is one thing I wanna tell u. The car's
reflectivity looks the same over the entire surface. In real life it
doens't happen like this. Cars reflectivity increases as the metal
bends away from the camera. By adding this effect yr car will look more
realisitic. (it is already looking very realistic though) There are
many ways to achieve this effect but I prefer to control the
reflectivity by animcurve. U get the total control over the
reflectivity with this animcurve method. If U don't know about it then
let me know. I will explain the entire process in detail. I will tell u
some other easy ways to do it too if u want me to. I'm not telling u
now b'coz I'm not sure whether u know it or not. If u don't know then
don't worry I'm there to help u. Keep up the good work. Bye.
Hi Pranay,
Thanks man. The whole model is basically polygon converted to
SubDs and then converted back to polys! MentalRay does not support
Nurbs or SubDs.
I am ready anytime to learn something new. I am new to Maya and not much of an animation guy but please do elaborate.
dude, that are pretty nice reflections. i guess u r using HDRI. i have
been stuck in mental ray when using HDRI. the specular reflections on
my model get burned when i use a HDRI image to light the scene. i have
been tearing my hair out to get it right over the past few days. looks
like u got it almost bang on!!! can u plz share ur technique of
lighting that car?? i need the solution like crazy.
and yeah, pretty good modeling too.
Hi Dolphin,
I basically assigned a HDRI to the ambient channel of a shader
and had the color channel cranked up all the way. I connected this
shader to a half sphere (which covered the entire scene). Yeah I also
changed the mapping of the half sphere to cylindrical (360 deg).
Cheers,
hmmm, that is amost exactly the way i do it. by the way the image has to be converted to a floating point tiff, right?
i would try the cylindrical mapping bit. it's so frustrating u cant see the tiff image in the viewport. damn.
thanx for replying.

p.s
one more thing, can u plz give the link where u got the hdri image u used to render the modena??
Hi dolphin,
I used HDRShop and converted mirrorball image to a Latitude and
Logitude one(if its like a mirrorball). For some nice HDRIs check out.
I am also in the process of making my own HDRIs

awesome texturing dude..... uve got da glossy look fine... as far as modelling goes i see some minor problems with the front glass ridges. they look a bit rough on the edges ...try getting that smooth finish....

rest alls good .... btw can u tell me how u got that texture...i am not comfortable with textures... just gimme the parameters if u don mind

Hi Ajay,
Thanks for the comments. Do you mean the front windscreen or the
headlights? Coming to the texture, I made a tutorial check it out here

yes, i use the converted ones.
i used the ones provided at debevec.com. since everybody else is getting fantastic
renders using those HDRIs, the problem seems to be with me.
i am in the process of using ur technique to render right now. will let
u know what happens. i have seen that every person has his diff way of
using a HDRI image.
i will also check out those links which u have provided.
and all the best for making your own HDRI images
isnt it time someone raised the bar a wee bit higher by comping the car onto a live-shot?
there are endless renders thrown in with some basic gi settings....
we need ourselves to go beyond the limits....RISE>>>>!!!

and congrats! for the plug mate.....( is this complete yet? or it's a wip?)

hey! manoj, strictly NO OFFENCE mate.....just that there are just about
so many people doing the same ol' thing....it kind of got into
me....and i'm sorry i chose this place to vent it out? period.

cheers!
Hi,
That was my initial thought too. But then again I am more of a
modelling guy and still need to learn about compositing. Maybe
someday
And I didnt get the plug bit.

Mental Ray does render NURBS as well as SUBDs. infact u will get better results rendering NURBS in MR than with the maya scanline renderer. As for Subds, u will have to collapse ur hierarchy to render in MR.Lastly, u can render your poly mesh subd in MR. select geometry, go to window>rendering editor>mr>approximation editor>subds>create , you will have to play with the settings.

hmmm....it thought that was similar to Maya tesselation settings. I will try the hierarchy thing.
