Yes...Atleast a lower card like 7300GS or 8400 GS is required for a smooth workflow...
Go for a 8600GT or 8800GT if u got cash..

there are certain things that really matter with maya
maya 32 or 64 bit
first the mother board does it match with amd normally asus does rather than intel
ram as much as you can (sometimes you need to remove them and put them back if you know how to other wise call you hardware vendor )
next is cooling of your system
graphic card should be the best i feel no one should make compromises with them if you gonna use maya
Microsoft Windows XP x64 Edition (SP1 or higher)
update your nvidia driver to the latest
just offline question but might help
what latest have you installed on your machine lemme know coz that might change the scene you can pm me with details
hope this helps

infact i purchased some cards recently , got a 7800gt 512 ram for 2800inr go for it damn good deal.
though your onbard graphics card lets you share upto 256 or 512 memory, it would not do much good to us running 3d applications. as this techinally partitions your available ram and the overall ram speed defaults down 133mhz regardless of the speed of the ram your have.hence having a dedicated vid card would tranltre into double benefit :- better graphics as well as better ram allocation.
infact go for a low end vid card even for your render machines.
